Gun safe question

Hello,

I just ordered my ar 15 and figured its time to get a gun safe. I have 4 hand guns and a 22 rifle currently. I have been putting the pistols in a small safe, but want to have something to protect my inbound ar.

I am in my early 20's and do not own a house, and am not planning on getting planted in any city for too long. So I don't want a safe that is a nightmare to move.

Does anyone know of a safe that is a happy medium between size and safety? This is pretty much a safe that needs to serve its purpose for a few years until I settle down.

Just get a decent gun cabinet or one of the small safes, they prevent most smash and grab burglaries. The only thing that stops a determined thief is a vault, or something with a little more stopping power.

Check out the American Security TF5917 or TF5924. Quality safe, not too big, but decent security.

Most those gun cabinets you can kick in or pry with extremely minimal force.

Most anything that is worth a damn will be 300+lbs at minimum.

You can get a Stack On steel cabinet and install it in the back corner of an apartment closet. Fasten to the floor and to at least four points in the walls (back and one side) Use those humongous 4 inch wood screws (called lag bolts? lag screws?) to screw into wall studs. Arrange it so it makes it impossible to bring a crow bar to bear on the door effectively due to the closet walls. When you move just remove the screws and spackle and paint the wall.

I don't own one, but it looks like a neat idea. Especially if you are young and likely to move around a few times.

Big second on these recommendations. The relatively low price and what you get out of AMSEC products are difficult to beat, what with their lifetime warranty and all. Personally, I would go with the TF5924-the '17 is "cute," but two rifles in that thing and you're already out of room. For you safe "weight" gurus the '17 and the '24 weight about 280# and 380# respectively. I would consider these safes to be the absolute minimum of what you should buy to protect your things.

Whatever you do, stay away from Stack-On, Sentry, and the cheaper Cannon's at Wal*Mart...

I was also recommend the TF5925. If your looking for something cheaper you can try the Sentry safes at Home Depot for $400, I think it's about 300lbs.

I purchesed a centurion safe from lowes for about 300 buck. its a 14 long gun safe.
One thing to keep in mind with these things is, you get what you pay for. its pretty cheap but one guy if determined can move the safe... unless bolted down. It is ideal tho for that inbetween gun cabnet and million pound fort knox safe...

If you can't secure it to your apartment look into a hidden safe. They make them look like a coffee table, an end table, or a bookcase.

The idea is that the criminal does not know its a safe.

Personally I like the kind you build into a bed. Harder to move then a small cabinet, but also harder to notice.

I would reccommend a sturdy safe. All safes should be bolted/anchored. Placement of safe should be thought out as well. I have one of the smaller sized sturdy safes and it weights in at over 700 pounds. You can't lie about weight, that goes for you women too! As for safes, gauge of steel is important as well.
