Help me spend 2k on a shotgun.

Got the Silver Pigeon!

$1,800+fees...When you take into account it only cost me 800+ I couldn't pass up the chance to own the Beretta, It's something I can be proud to give my son someday.











For Christmas my family pooled up 1,000 for me specifically for a new upland game gun(I primarily hunt dove/quail/pheasant). I'm going to match their thousand with another which should put me in the market for either a Beretta 686 or a Browning Citori.

Does anybody have any other suggestions? I've taken plenty of game with my friends 20 year old 686 and I'm leaning heavily towards the Silver Pigeon. I've never shot a Citori so I don't know what(if anything) I may be missing.




If you have a suggestion for another make/model of over under 12G in a 28" barrel that you think I should look into I'd like to hear about it too.

I have had a few Brownings and love 'em.
My vote would be for a Citori, or a model 625 with 28" barrels for field use.
It's easy to get sucked into paying for fancy wood but remember it would be money wasted when it gets scratched and dinged in the field.
I have a Citori XT with Grade III wood. The wood is unbelievable, engraved action, therefore I would never use it in inclement rain.

I suppose I'd shoot at clays too if I felt like it, otherwise just for hunting. I use a 28" Nova currently, I'll bring that along when we push pheasant for the 3.5"'s...I've taken pheasant with 3" shells but I prefer 3.5" considering how tough these birds can be, and how slowly I run. We push all day and I'm getting tired of hauling that big *** pump around, even slung(which creates it's own problems) it's a pain.

Fancy wood isn't what I'm after, it's gonna get beat up so it needs to be tough. My buddies 686 looks like ****, but it's tough as nails and smooth as butter...I'm leaving now to fondle whatever the local guys might have on the rack. Fingers crossed!

Haha, don't fall in love at first sight! I know how tough that can be.

As far as O/U, I only have experience with 2. The first being a Browning Citori, which my cousin still has to this day, and is as you say, tough as nails. I dropped it twice in the same trip, and both times I just wiped it down and kept on walkin'. He's never said ONE bad thing about it.

The second was a Beretta. I don't know the model, but WOW was that a shotgun. It locked up so tight, all parts were flush, the wood was nearly seemlessly bound to the receiver, and the engraving was flawless. There was no wiggle or loose anything, yet the movement was so smooth and buttery, not too tight. When you hold it, you know that someone put some serious time and effort into creating such a beautiful piece. When you shoot it, it's like you've died and gone to heaven.

Not to downplay the Browning in anyway, but it's no wonder why he let me use the Browning, and the Beretta stays in the safe waiting for clay pigeons. I hope when he's done with it, he can pass it on to me at a discount.



Browning is good, but if you have the cash, spring for top quality. If you're worried about it getting banged up, just buy one Browning and save the rest of the cash for when you want another!

as far as pheasant hunting goes....3.5" mags? Really? I've killed them deadrr than Caesar with 2 3/4" 20 ga loads. You're abusing yousrself unnecessarily with those goose loads. Anything with an ounce or better of 6s (or 4s or 5s in steel) is plenty for the ditchparrots.

It's slim pickins where we hunt sometimes, we chamber 3.5 because we will likely be running them down for some long shots. Shoot 20g 2 3/4 here and these birds will turn and laugh as the coast away.

SP1 is an amazing gun. I just gone one myself, but its been in "jail" since 12/12
