Once you start debating what an "assault weapon" is, you've already lost the argument. The "assault weapon" argument says that some guns are bad but some are okay. You should reject the "assault weapon" argument and point out that guns are inanimate objects and are neither good nor bad (morally). What needs to be controlled is the criminal's actions that are violent.

Assault Weapon is a made up term used by the media and people unfamiliar with firearms to describe a military style rifle or anything LOOKING like a military firearm. Its all about the looks and has nothing to do with functions. It was then adopted by the law makers who turned it into a legal term and in each State they have their own list of criteria for what an Assault Weapon is. Some States do not even require the firearm to be functional to be classified as a dangerous weapon.

Assault Rifle is a industry term used to describe a military issue, fully automatic rifle, chambered in a typical rifle round many have a shorten barrel, under what a typical carbine would have. Its primary use was first trench clearing operations in war. It was then widely used by all militarys around the world as they issued them to specialized troops for building clearing. Nowadays most all troops carry Assault Rifles and only specialized troops carry Battle-Field Rifles.

The military describes assault rifles as being fully auto. Civilian AR's are sporting rifles since they are semi auto. We have to start calling them by what they are if we are going to change the uninformed minds.

So if my hands and feet are registered does that make me an assault weapon? Can I be banned from myself ? Lifes many questions seldom offer few answers

An assault weapon/rifle is only an assault object if it is used to assault someone or something

+1.... so the banana will be considered an "assault weapon"...

Assault Rifle is a select-fire, intermediate caliber rifle. If its full-size rifle caliber, its a Battle Rifle.

I've always assumed that Assault refers more to its tactical role. It's a lightweight, generally shorter carbine that would be more maneuverable in exchange for range and lethality of a larger rifle.
