They cited riverside county sheriff officers saying that you can only shoot in designated areas is that true?

I have read the ordinance referred to here and am not sure but it seems the area they are now addressing is not included in the description. Although, it is very difficult to decipher. As they said in the article this is about pressure now from the public due to the situation in CT. If anyone else understands the document it might be interesting but in no way worth confronting the cops. http://rivcocob.com/ords/500/514.htm

This was the area previously used by Palm Springs PD for practice.
As I understood it, when the citizens of Palm Springs paid for the new police station and firing range that part of the deal was that the public would be allowed to use it. That has not been the case.

was it ever actually a 'range'? article says it was always illegal to shoot there, LE just was a bit lax about enforcing

It was always referred to as the old police range. Not a formal range as one might think of a typical firing range but it is isolated and far from homes and businesses. It is a cove in the mountain. People have been shooting there for 40 or 50 years as far as I know. It is pretty polluted as the article states with thousands of spent shells and make shift targets on the ground. The people I have seen there are pretty responsible and have not caused problems. In the past I have only gone there because it was a close, free place to shoot a few rounds to make sure my equipment was functioning properly.

Wonder if any of you responsible shooters that went out there are going to help clean it up?

That is a good suggestion. Although it is the middle of the desert and there is no other reason to go there it could improve the opinion of people who enjoy shooting firearms.
