Post from May 2006: Pre-Bullet Button - About getting OLL while you can...

    Gaze into my crystal ball......

This post was from early 2006 when the OLL/OLR availability issue in CA was at it's forefront, everyone was still trepidatious and not fully sure of all the aspects about what would or could happen next.

This was just after late 2005 and early 2006 (Jan/February) when we were getting Deer, Atom, LWS, and other "code-named" OLL in discrete manners from a handful of FFLs willing to sell them, "off-list" and typically just AR items ONLY, pre bullet-button concepts. I don't even think the Prince-50 was available yet. People were still arguing here on Calguns the legality of it all... "you're going to jail" and other FUD was rampant well through the rest of that year.

Obama as the US President was not even a likelihood let alone a serious thought at that time.

    Good times....

....I STILL enjoy the benefit of having purchased TRUE standard AR & AK receivers before an eventual national ban similar to the Clinton Crime-Bill ban of 1994, which will likely be reinstalled by our next Democrat President (Ms. Rodham, or maybe McCain; RINO at large).

I will then, at that time own, "Pre-Rodham-Ban" or Pre-McCain-Ban" rifles. I got the chance to buy them as a California citizen just as other citizens around the United States have been able to buy "Pre-National-ban" configuration ARs and AKs these past 2 years, whereas without this latest "Off-list" lower craze, we as CA citizens might not ever have been able to run a 4473 on a straight-up AR or AK receiver.

This gave me some hope. I spent about two horus getting all my ammo together and counting every round. All i need now is about is a lower and another 12G and i'm good.

Having bought 20 AR lowers that December ($110 to $125 a pop) and first week of January, roughly about the same time I joined Calguns.... standing in line in Highland, late-night, in the cold, cold air without about 60 or so other new Calgunners. Hector, Michelle and their troop processing DROSes as fast as they could. Those cold nights, like this very same night today, gave a whole new meaning to "Cold War Shooters".

Memories! I remember those cold evenings as well when my buddy and I drove over there to purchase our first AR-pattern lowers - good times.

"From the way this reads, so long as I use a muzzle brake or standard crown end, a regular rifle stock with no pistol grip, no bayonet lug, etc., then I can build these Off-list lowers into configurations no different than any legally owned M1A, Mini-14, Mini-30, Kel-tec SU16 (A,B, or CA), Browning BAR Safari II, Remington 7400, M1-Carbine, Marlin Camp Carbine 9mm/.45ACP, Ruger PC4 or PC9, Robinson Armament M96, Czech Vz-52, French MAS 49, Egyptian Hakim, etc., as none are listed by name, are semi-auto, and all have "detachable magazines".

It looks like the push is coming down to shove. The quote turned out to be as true back then as it is true today. It just looks like under ten years later, we will be called on to defend it en masse instead of little bits at a time.
