    Moving into California soon

Hello Calguns, I've been lurking for a while now, but finally decided to post.

I currently live in a free state, and bought my first AR-15 (with an OLL) a week ago, before the recent events in Connecticut. However, I'm going to be moving to California in the next few months (I got a great job there). I've already looked over the Calguns flowchart extensively, bought and installed a Bullet Button, and verified that my rifle is (at the moment) 100% CA legal. However, in light of recent events and with talk of potentially both new federal and state regulations, I'm not sure what my next move should be.

It seems that things could go a number of different ways politically, and I want to be prepared for any eventualities.

    1) First and foremost, I want to remain on the right side of all federal and state laws.

    2) I don't want to end up in a situation where my rifle is legal in North Carolina, but I'm unable to import it to California. How much of a loss (or profit) will be involved if I sell it to a private party. I haven't even fired it yet.

    3) Would there be any benefit to trying to establish residency in California sooner rather than later? For example, if my rifle ends up being banned by name at the federal level, and California therefore won't allow it to be imported into the state after a certain date, even if it was grandfathered in at the federal level.

    4) Historically, how long have these federal and state bills taken to wind their way through the legislature?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Calguns and it's always nice to deal with someone who can do their own research. In my opinion I think your fine. History shows that when California bans a type of firearm there is a period of time to register it. As for the time it would take to inact such legislation I would probably put the minimum at a year. I would recommend that you buy all the handguns you want now that aren't listed on the handgun roster before arrival. http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

Coming here will be the absolutely BIGGEST mistake of your life, especially if 2A is important to you. Most of us have been caught up in what used to be a fantastic place to live that has now given way to ridiculous politics and a quickly rotting society like no other state in the union. After 50 years, my wife and are OUT of here, hopefully next year. This past election, we saw the pendulum swing to the hardest left. There is no way in hell it will ever correct, now. No way. The price of admission for what niceties that are left here is way to high. It's a terrible shame but it's true.

We can't predict the future. Currently your gun sounds legal, depending on if we can stop SB47 (again, was tried and failed last time) it would still be legal. If we lose, depending on how poorly the law is written there will likely be a different work around than the bullet button..... which we shouldn't discuss or speculate on while the bill is pending even if it is obvious.

Make sure you shuffle into the state backwards, bent over with your pants around your ankles with "DNC" tattooed on your left cheek.

I had absolutely no choice but to return since being caught off guard in a failed marriage due to that "For sickness and in health" lie she took. Since the drive back to the only place i had to put a roof over my head ive been making plans on going to colorado.

Avoid it at all costs. after being in the free state of texas for 5 years, i never ever understood just how bad this craphole is.

Seriously, AVOID at all cost and not only on a 2a level. you can't do anything here without being turned into a criminal.

I know you are probably excited about your new job, but you might regret it in the long run. If your life doesn't absolutely suck right now, cause of finances, you should really try getting that job somewhere els. Unless you really don't care about your 2A.

For a state that sucks so bad, people keep coming back. Welcome back, help join the fight to stop our anti gun bills coming from both sides of the political party.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I grew up in California and only moved out of state a few years ago, so I already mostly know what we're getting into with the state politics. I was there during the Gray Davis recall, and I'm drinking out of my KFI coffee mug right now.

Thanks so much for all the replies, I really appreciate it!

Worst case you just buy a new lower receiver.

A good job is more important than a rifle that's illegal in California.
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Won't question why you're coming back but welcome! We need more gunners in the state not less
