You could own the item and not install it on the gun within CA and only assemble it when in a free state.

If you mount it on a Glock (or the similar setup for a 1911) you have an AW - semiauto centerfire rifle with detachable magazine and pistol grip.

There might be a way of making a 10rd fixed mag configuration, dunno, be pretty stupid anyway.

Do thread search on Mechtech. Another member built one using a 1911 with a recessed mag catch that requires a tool to drop the mag. This is essentially a 1911 bullet button.

On a Glock you can modify the mag catch to function like a bullet button or use a screw to fasten a 10 round magazine to the frame. If the magazine is "fixed" then the only way to load it is to disassemble the action by removing the Glock frame from the CCU and load top load it. The Glock frame is removed from the Mechtech CCU by engaging the take down lever.

Is this approach as "stupid" as an AR with a Prince50 maglock ? To each their own.

But it's still registered as a pistol?

Just saw the stock off the mechtech unit

then turn the upper so that it doesn't have any shroud around the barrel and you should be good to go.

Here's the catch - if you remove the shroud you also remove the 8 screws (4 on each side) that hold the barrel & innards in place. So you really can't go the pistol route.

I have a 1911 with the wire stock, raised sight rail & laser/flashlight rail up front and a 458 SOCOM flash hider. I use a Para P10 1911 receiver. Picture the wire stock plus the rail on the unit:

The trick is the mag release - I had replaced my plastic Para mag release and got an extended steel one for using as a handgun. Didn't toss it out for some reason and when someone else posted info here, it prompted me to simply file it down (very, very easy to do) to just below 1911 receiver width. A standard 1911 mag release works perfectly as a tool to depress the shortened release. I can remove the mag very quickly & easily, quicker than an M1 carbine with the hold open follower. Not sure how you'd do it on a Glock.

I fixed the collapsible wire stock with a pin so it can't move. It is reversible.

I use an EER scope set up towards the muzzle. It's great when using the rifle in state, wire stock fixed. In OR I collapse the stock and the EER scope serves the same purpose as a handgun scope. With a regular mag set up it's like having a 14 shot 45 ACP T/C. I tried one of those 50 round circular ProMag mags but they are heavy as hell, not reliable.

There are probably other ways to meet the fixed mag requirement - such as a tab running horizontally over the release from one side of the gun to the other, fitted under the grips.

But the shortened mag release seems best. Mech Tech is a small company and it would be nice if they offered a shortened mag release to comply with CA law. And unlike the Midways and Sportsmans and CTD types, they ship direct to your door in CA. Or you can buy this non - gun on GB.

I was at Chabot last week and when you explain that attaching a 1911 handgun frame to a non -gun results in an assault rifle - even AW savvy shooters kind of give a "huh, how's that?" look.

All in all, even in CA, the gun's a ball to shoot.

Sorry to bump this up, but I hope there are still people here in CA wanting to buy the conversion like I do. Well, I came up with a few ideas.

First one is to use kydex to wrap around the end of the upper. It drapes down to block the thumb area, which neutralizes the pistol grip. It's obviously better than wrapping around the pistol grip which makes converting back to pistol a PITA. Might serve as a cheek rest too!

For 1911, duct tape might have to be used to "permanently" depress the grip safety.

Second idea is to go the pistol route, cut the barrel down to 15"~ and install a AR pistol buffer tube in place of a stock.

This is the Monsterman Grip style...I'm sure you could do it but it would have to have a fixed stock...adjustable is another evil feature. as is the forward grip and flash supressor, unless it is considered a muzzle break

yeah, they have fixed stock, or i could just fix those adjustable stock in place.

the muzzle device is optional, as described on their website, is not functional and purely cosmetic, but i wouldn't want it anyway because it doesn't do anything;

i know the VFG should have been a magpul AFG (not considered VFG), just didn't care to find a better picture as example but thx for the heads up.

The downside of this is that right handed shooters can no longer use their thumb to release magazine, but I'd take that over bullet button anyday.

BTW, the same thing can be done for the other carbine conversion---HERA, either as pistol configuration or rifle with the muzzle extension.
