We have the RIGHT to own guns. We know that. The left knows it. The works knows it.
But with those rights we have unwritten responsibilities. They are not written in the Constitution. Some are written in state laws, like keeping guns away from children. Some are common sense, like locking them up. But it appears there is no consistency across the board.
A co-worker says she will pull her kids out of school if she found out a principal or teacher was carrying a firearm. She has no worries about a fire extinguisher being on property, but she is worried that kids are smart and may steal the gun. It can happen, but of course there needs to be some responsibility taken by the gun owner.
The Brady bunch has thought about being responsible for us. The limit our magazine capacity, the number of firearms we can buy in a month, in other words they are treating us like children, probably because they do not feel we are responsible.
An individual is responsible, but the stories that get out are most likely the exception to the rule, the ones that show how dumb a person can be. Most of these result in the shooting death of a family member due to irresponsibility.
So I wonder, are there a list of Ten Commandments or something like that for gun owners that convey the responsibilities at hand? Is there something we can show someone who thinks we are slackers and rednecks? Is there a consistent across-the-board list somewhere that all gun owners should know and do? I know states differ but I mean at the core level. Friends and family trust me with firearms due to military and law enforcement experiences, but I am likely the exception to the rule. I just think if there was a set of responsibilities adhered to that we could show off then folks would not freak out like they do now?
