Everyone knows our Rights, but what about responsibilities?

We have the RIGHT to own guns. We know that. The left knows it. The works knows it.

But with those rights we have unwritten responsibilities. They are not written in the Constitution. Some are written in state laws, like keeping guns away from children. Some are common sense, like locking them up. But it appears there is no consistency across the board.

A co-worker says she will pull her kids out of school if she found out a principal or teacher was carrying a firearm. She has no worries about a fire extinguisher being on property, but she is worried that kids are smart and may steal the gun. It can happen, but of course there needs to be some responsibility taken by the gun owner.

The Brady bunch has thought about being responsible for us. The limit our magazine capacity, the number of firearms we can buy in a month, in other words they are treating us like children, probably because they do not feel we are responsible.

An individual is responsible, but the stories that get out are most likely the exception to the rule, the ones that show how dumb a person can be. Most of these result in the shooting death of a family member due to irresponsibility.

So I wonder, are there a list of Ten Commandments or something like that for gun owners that convey the responsibilities at hand? Is there something we can show someone who thinks we are slackers and rednecks? Is there a consistent across-the-board list somewhere that all gun owners should know and do? I know states differ but I mean at the core level. Friends and family trust me with firearms due to military and law enforcement experiences, but I am likely the exception to the rule. I just think if there was a set of responsibilities adhered to that we could show off then folks would not freak out like they do now?

There are an awful lot of gun owners in this country that show that they are responsible day in day out, year after year. But I see what your getting at. Im just not sure it would appease most of the citizenry from what I have been reading lately. I dont think there is any amount of responsibility we could show to make the politicians happy and still be able to excercise our right as it was intended, which is to keep the gov. in check. Cant do it with their neutering.

This states gun owners have been beat up with so called responsible laws but none stop people from getting shot. I wont go into them but, you can figuratively blow holes through most of the so called laws that have been enacted in the name of common sense.

We need to change the mindset that the gun is not the evildoer, it is the person behind it. Until then, lawabiding, safety-minded, responsible gun owners are gonna be infringed upon.

There is a frenzy going on right now, that does not bode well for us as gunowners, and if something is not done about it, and they get their way, we will never get see these freedoms again.

Personally, I dont think anything should be given up or comprimised. Gunowners have lost a lot of freedoms only to lose more over the years and not many have anything good to say about us still.

If there is going to be a change I would like to see the media plastering all over the news every one of the 200,000 times a year a gun owner thwarts a robbery, kidnapping or killing. Maybe public perception would change.

Being villified all the time on the news just contributes to the ignorance we are reading in social sites right now. How would anything stand a chance in such a climate. People have no idea about gun competitions when they ask why does anyone need an AR. The general public needs more education about how guns are used recreationally and I think thats where the NRA should concentrate some efforts and dollars. The most mention they get is from the ignorant who think that it is an org for rich white redneck republicans.

Someone needs to stand up and tell the politicians this isn't about hunting. Its a protection provided for us against them and they are the last ones to tell us how its going to be. Military style rifles are exactly what we need if the situation ever presents itself. As far as I'm concerned there should be no discussion whatsoever. And any politician that tries to water our rights down should be run out on a rail at the least. (rant over)

I totally agree. I think they know and they want to take them away because of that. We do need military style rifles.
