    Carrying in a vehicle?

...O.K., I've been searching this morning but can't seem to find the definitive answers I'm looking for, so, sorry if this is a dup' and stoopid.

I'm getting a pistol that I'd like to carry in the car on trips, and in the truck or on the bike while offroading, etc.

I believe I was told by a local shop that it had to be in a locked case, unloaded, with ammo outside that box.
    That sound about right.

Mainly I want it to carry with while dualsporting in the desert for protection.

    Thanks in advance.

Ammo can be in a magazine inside the same locked case as the unloaded pistol.
The locked case can be anywhere in the vehicle.

Check the wiki at the top for easily searchable legal answers.

The trunk counts as a "locked case" but if you carry in your truck or a hatchback you will need a locking case

I never knew if the car had folding seats if the trunk would technically still be considered locked.

I isn't really defined, so assume the worst. You need a locked case to get it to and from the trunk in many situations anyway.

Yeah I keep a simple lock on the zipper just in case it was an issue.

So what's the deal with long guns these days? Haven't been keeping up, but I just read something in another thread where as of 1/1/2013 you have to have long guns locked up in the vehicle at all times???

Before it was just within X feet from schools (I think), but now they must be locked up all the time?

Cheapest and one of the best ways to keep a gun locked in your car in my opinion. A locked zippered bag is sufficient, but with this you will always be secured and no officer should be able to say anything about it. It is what I use.

OUTSIDE a vehicle, unloaded long guns must be in either
                      a) a purpose-designed completely enclosing gun case OR
                      b) a locked completely enclosing case that was not designed to be a gun case.

Inside the vehicle, no restriction beyond GFSZ, but getting to and from the vehicle, the new law can be an issue.

Ahhh, so they don't have to be locked necessarily, just cased.

                        Thanks Librarian.

Ok, so according to what the wiki and some of you are saying is that, there are no laws restricting transporting of a loaded magazine so long as said magazine is not in the magwell of a handgun, and that the handgun is unloaded either in a locked trunk, or locked container inside vehicle. I ask because a shooting range I frequent has said that carrying a loaded mag even if not in the firearm is still considered part of the firearm and is a felony now in Cali, is that BS?

                            It's an error, yes.

For the long answer, see the wiki article on loaded -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/De..._in_California
