Looking for locking pistol case and safe

Howdy all. Went out today and purchases my first pistol and figured while I wait for the 10 days, I would go out and look around for a locking hard case and safe for said weapon. Anyone have any recommendations? Or better yet, anyone in the NorCal area recommend any shops that might have those?

I've been studying safes for months. In my own personal opinion anything under $1K is going be lacking in quality and most of all safety. A Sturdy Safe, as mentioned above is a great idea, but is pricey. If you have to go sub $1K I'd recommend the AMSEC TF 5924 or the Cannon/Patriot P14. Their warranties are excellent and if you get to see one in person they're not bad, and they're a million times better than anything from Sentry, Stack-On, or those cheap Cannons at Costco and Wal*Mart. Whatever you do, do not buy anything from Sentry, Stack-On, or any safe from a hardware or a big-box store...

Agreed on this.

That being said, just realize that the Cannons are made in China, and the Amsec's are made in Fontana, so local in So Cal and in the USA... if that makes a difference to you. I personally just spent $150 more over the TF went with an Amsec SF5924, and its currently being custom built to my specs (approx 3-4 weeks).

Walmart & Costco sells the Cannon Scout series safes.

Seriously though, I was looking or something too- small to fit in a backpack. I was thinking about one of the 'gunvault nanovaults'. Maybe the 300? I'm more inclined to get something that I don't need a key to get in to. Or the MVB500, that one is more costly, but I think I like the unlocking method better. I have a Nanovault 300 w/combo lock. It works great and is a nice lockable box. However, it's pretty heavy and when you add a gun and a mag or two in there, and then want to carry that around.... IMO it's way too heavy to be lugging that thing around everywhere you go.

In CA, you only need the handgun in a "locked container" of some type, so using a fabric pistol case/bag that is small & light with 2 zippers that can be padlocked together might be a better idea, if you plan on traveling or carrying it around with you in a backpack or something.

It's fine, I understand. No such thing as too much info/intel when it comes to something like this in my opinion.

For carrying the gun around, I agree with SDM44's suggestion of getting a fabric pistol case and locking the zippers together (some of them come with zippers that have a separate opening specifically for a small luggage lock). I have a couple of Maxpedition soft cases that I use for toting pistols to/from the range.

Ok, got it. Thanks for the suggestions all. Ended up buying a cheap locking hard case from Plano on Amazon. I'll use that till I can get more funds and get a nice safe. Hopefully by then I'll be able to buy a nice rifle too.

Plano with 2 padlocks for transport. Ft Knox Personal Pistol Box for quick access. Ft Knox Protector for everything else. Very happy with all. Good luck with your choices.
