    Gun insurance quesion

Is there anyone here that has their guns listed on their homeowners insurance? If so, what company do you use and are you happy with them?

I know that there are some companies that will insure your guns independent of your homeowners, but I am not sure if they are really legit / solid companies.

I will go with one of them if I have to, but I would rather go through a large established company and add them as a rider or something to an existing policy.

I guess that the larger question is what is the best way to insure more than a couple of firearms?

IIRC, the NRA will insure your firearms up to $2.5k if you are a member

$2,500.00 NO COST ArmsCare Benefits: Set up exclusively for NRA Members, ArmsCare gives you a safety net for your firearms. Your firearms are protected against theft (from your home or a locked portion of your vehicle) … against loss (it could happen as quickly as an overturned duck boat) … and against damage (from fire or flood for instance).

I know it isn't a whole lot, but it's free if you are already a member.

Most Homeowners and renters policies cover firearms up to a set amount. Maybe $1K or $2K. If you need more coverage, you purchase a 'Rider' to increase the amount of coverage. Each carrier has different requirements and limitations.
NRA covers $2,500.0O with paid membership. You can purchase additional coverage if you like.
Before you start shopping for insurance, you need to know the dollar value you need too cover.
I have AAA Auto Club for my house and cars and am very pleased.
      Good luck.

You can buy additional insurance on top of your homeowner policy. Have it with state farm...covered all collectable from guns to artworks.

State Farm can give you a "sporting goods" policy that covers your arms. I've done that in the past its fairly inexpensive.

I have a rider on my renters insurance policy through USAA. The NRA's free coverage isn't large enough to cover all my firearms, but I should probably compare the price of their firearms policy to the policy I currently have.

Has anyone filed a claim with the NRA for stolen/damaged firearms? How easy were they to deal with?

I have State Farm. I laughed at my policy because it covers 1500.00 for firearms and 3000.00 for computers. I asked my agent if it was out dated and developed at a time when computers were very expensive and she said "yep!"

Thank you for all the advice. I have Farmers and I seem to remember that when I asked my agent a year or so ago, it was going to be an issue. I will call tomorrow and ask him again. I am fine with paying extra money, I just want them to be there when the worst happens (no, not the fishing trip gone bad thing.....).

I also do not want to provide anyone with a "list" of my guns. I keep good records myself, but who wants that type of info floating around out there.

Most renters/homeowners only cover up to a fairly low amount. Guns, jewelry, art, collectibles, etc.

Normally you need to set up a "personal valuables policy" to cover things of high value.

Even a large engagement ring wont be covered by most renters/homeowners. Look at the payouts on the policy for jewelry/guns, it will cover jewelry to a low amount, but 1 expensive ring or watch will be higher than the policy limit. Same with people with a few guns.

Those normally go on a 'personal valuables policy". The distinct advantage of that policy, besides covering replacement cost, covers damage, theft, fire, flood, even accidental damage or loss. This is something the standard ins policy doesnt cover. You're at a rifle match, another competitor 'accidentally' kicks over your rifle, and your $2,500 US Optics scope broke... the reticle is wobbling around inside the scope.... **ITS COVERED!!!**

Same thing... the wife/fiance, knocked that engagement ring into something, that 1/2 carat diamond popped out and she didnt realize until she got home.... It's covered too. As long as you declare the stuff with a replacement cost value to the insurance company.

I have USAA. Renters policy only covers 2000 or 2,500 guns. Pretty much the same with jewelry. Thats *ALL GUNS* and ALL jewelry. You need the valuables policy added to cover each higher end item individually.

Speaking of which... I need to call and add a few new guns/optics/reloading equipment/etc.

It's not a lot of money for what it covers. I think right now it costs me about $70-80/yr for the jewelry/guns.

Plus I have the NRA coverage and the standard renters ins too.

--My coverage does require make/model/serial/caliber- just an FYI

There are a lot of subtleties.

                        2 policies = 2 deductibles.

The limit on most HO or renters policies is for loss due to theft only.

When you schedule items you usually do pick up perils that are not included for unscheduled property. (As mentioned above)

Read you policy. Talk to your agent.

farmers has an extra coverage for guns on the renters insurance. You can add it to your policy.

I have Allstate and it covers $5000 for firearms. An additional rider isn't very expensive although you need additional documentation for it (the first $5000 is blanket; they don't ask for documentation up front). The only problem with my policy is that jewelry is only covered for $1000, so an additional rider was necessary for my wife's stuff and it was more expensive for the rider. Makes sense though, since jewelry is the thieves favorite thing to steal.

They also gave me a slight discount for having a safe, so make sure you note that when getting your estimates and policy. Keep in mind too that in California earthquakes aren't covered without an additional policy underwritten by the state. A good policy will cover everything else - theft, fire, water damage (although sometimes not flood), etc. My policy covers all of these and it wasn't very expensive for the peace of mind it gives me.

Some home policies do not cover guns when they are being used which can leave gun enthusiasts with a lack of insurance protection if their gun is damaged while on a shoot. Gun Insurance is primary insurance and offers full value, world wide coverage.
