    Safe Situation

Ok, so I have a question for my fellow more experienced calgunners reguarding my first safe purchase. I have been looking into some different models here and there, but dont want to pitch out the money, but the time has come. I have slowley started to increase my collection without even realizing it. I feel that I am being slightly irresposible with my storage techniques now and that a safe would be a good investment.

Which leads to my problem. Even if I do bite the bullet and purchase a safe, where, and how do I store it. I rent from some friends in their home right now and I dont think they would appricaite me bolting a safe into their floor or onto the wall anywhere in the house. So is a safe really the best idea for me? I mean if I get a big enough safe I wouldnt expect anyone to walk out the door with it because of the weight, unless it was a pre planned robbery and that was the specific target, but at that point a safe wont stop them either. I was looking into a medium sized safe, maybe a 24 gun to start with. That would give me enough room for what I already own and room to grow into, but the only place I can put it is in my room in plane sight. My other idea was a smaller safe and hide it in the closet, but then im limited to space and anyone looking to steal something would check their either way.

I have thought about a gun cabinet, but I cant help but think that just puts everything into a pre wrapped and early christmas prestent for any robber. I mean honestly two middle aged males could pick something like that up and walk out the door. Even if a cabinet was bolted down, it wouldnt take much to get in. Id feel better knowing that they had to walk individuale cases out one at a time.

Just wanted some input before a put up the money. Thanks everyone for your time.

Talk with your friends. If there's a carpeted closet you could bolt the safe and then just replace the carpet in that one area.

There is always the option of storing your weapons at a gun store but that's just a monthly expense that would never end and keep you from your weapons.

            desertjunkie,

you can go with something like this - http://www.zanottiarmor.com/safes.htm

put it in your room that you know the safe won't go thru the door. i considered this because i wasn't sure i wanted to bolt it down given i was renting too. going to be hard to steal the safe if it won't go thru the door.

now, bolting down is the best thing you can do to protect your safe also. it's not just 100% prevention. if someone wants to get in there w/o removing the save, they'll find a way.

I went with a Snapsafe, it's just like the Zanotti safe mentioned above but it's pretty much available online and a few hundred dollars less (Zanotti is made in the USA and is made to order, which is great but I'm poor at the moment and I needed a safe right away).

Anyways, the Zanotti is probably the safe you want since it will accommodate more than 12+ firearms, my Snapsafe only handles like 12 rifles...these safes are nice in that they are easily assembled by one person and you can get it into places that you wouldn't normally get a typical safe (Ex. an attic, small cellar, odd shaped closet, etc.). Plus one day when you move out of the house, you can take the safe apart and move it yourself and keeps things fairly discreet.

If you get a safe, bolting it down is essential...since you don't own your place, you need to take that up with the home owner, so that's a bit of a dilemma. When I lived in a similar situation, I just got myself a lockable truck cargo box and hid it in the common area where my roommates and I would put our large empty boxes, maybe you can try this with a better container, like a KNAACK or something? The KNAACK boxes are pretty heavy duty and you can probably camouflage it with some refrigerator box out in your garage or something.

Get a modular safe, snapsafe or dakota interlock. Zanotti is backordered like 16 months.

Get a big heavy safe, bolt it to the floor, and deal with any drama regarding that when you move out.

Also, you'll be only able to have about half the number of long guns in your safe as it is advertised, unless all you own are .410 breach loader youth guns.
