    Red gun stuff...

I was curious... a friend of mine just got into powder coating. He has recently gotten into powder coating magazines for his pistols. One of the ones he did is this awesome candy apple red.

Then I realized... I've never really seen a red gun. I asked a friend at the range a few minutes ago, and he said he thought only LEOs could, but freely acknowledged that this was likely FUD.

Is it legal to paint guns red?

And yeah... I know I said "paint" but the question is about the color, not the process.

I talked to a guy at the last OC gun show that does Cerakote, and he said he wouldn't do anything completely in blue because it would make it look like a dummy/practice gun. He never said anything about any colors being illegal though. YMMV

You're probably thinking of this Penal Code which doesn't seem to preclude red:

23800. Any person who, for commercial purposes, purchases, sells, manufacturers, ships, transports, distributes, or receives a firearm, where the coloration of the entire exterior surface of the firearm is bright orange or bright green, either singly, in combination, or as the predominant color in combination with other colors in any pattern, is liable for a civil fine in an action brought by the city attorney of the city or the district attorney for the county of not more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

It's possible that some provisions of the former 12020 sections concerning "any firearm which is not immediately recognizable as a firearm" might apply, you'd have to talk to counsel about that.
