    Question on SA85

Need opinion if removing thumbhole stock on legally registered assault rifle and replacing with pistol grip and folding stock falls afoul of any ca. assault weapons laws or any federal laws. thanks

If it's a registered assault weapon you can do ANYTHING short of SBRing it. That means it can be as low as 26" with the stock folded, pistol grip, removable magazines, flash suppressor, etc.

If it's registered, it's free game like any other state. The only other thing that you must be careful of is in California overall length is measured with the stock folded. Other than that, it's like you were in any other state.

Since it's registered, you can do whatever you want to it as long as it complies with federal laws.

Fed law says you have to play the 922r parts game if you want to add a pistol grip and/or folding stock.

I did a stock/pg conversion on my registered SA-85M (thumbhole stock) years ago.

I have had a couple different stock sets on it. It currently has a blonde Hungarian AKM stock set on it, to keep it all Hungarian original.

You would need to add a number of USA 922R compliance parts to make it legal. 922R compliance worksheet

You'll need to order a standard pistol grip screw & nut. The ones with the thumbhole stock will not work with a standard PG IIRC.

Some of your choices are: hammer, trigger, disconnector, pistol grip, muzzle brake, mag follower, mag floorplate, stock & handguard. Just as long as you don't have more than 10 foreign parts listed in 922R for the AKM type.

Just an FYI, if you do decide to replace the gas piston with a US made unit. The SA-85 uses a slightly shorter gas piston than your normal AKM.
