Does anyone know if there any plans or rumors for a shooting range in the Westlake / Thousand Oaks area? Seems like a big distance between the Ventura and Oxnard ranges all they way out to the SF valley ranges. I know Simi Valley is lacking too. Is it just too expensive to open a range these days and be profitable? I'd imagine insurance alone is killer. I think the demand is there.

Used to be one in Agoura Hills but the owner had to shut it down because too many morons used it to rent guns and then commit suicide. His insurance got to be insurmountable to stay in business. Too bad because I used it several times, fairly close to me.Last edited by ken5714; 12-08-2012, 4:55 PM.Comment

Unfortunately that place is closed. We have Island view in Ventura and shooters paradise in Oxnard both nice indoor ranges. But nothing for like a 40 or so mile stretch going south. Not too bad for the weekends, but too hard to do for me during the week.
I dream of taking my lunch breaks at the shooting range. The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thingComment

There is a private range in Moorpark. The owner is a member here. He may chime in...Comment

I live right next to Santa Rosa Valley, I would be extremely interested in shooting out in Moorpark, I drive through there every few weeks and marvel at all of the acreage out there and think to myself, 'Man, why doesn't someone open a range out here?".
I am responsible, respectful, and a safe shooter and would gladly patronize whomever has this range, PM me if you are the range owner. that's not true, some idiot started a fire shooting tracers into the rubber backstop, as well as the canyon club not continuing their lease.Charlie don't surf!Comment

I must know more! I'm in moorpark and dream of a local range.
As far as original post.... I remember going to shooters paradise in simi but insurance too high so closed. Then it moved to agoura and some douche rented a .22 and put it to his head. Then there was a fire and insurance was again to high. Now they're join Oxnard.
I HIGHLY recommend you check out Wes Thompson piru range. It is worth the 40 minute drive. The best shooting around, especially if you shoot long rifleComment

So much to say, so little time...
A private range in Moorpark? I know of three and I'm sure there are many many more if you count the entire range from Somis - Simi - Fillmore. Generally speaking, when your acreage has three 0's, you don't have "a range", you just go out and shoot.
Piru isn't that much further, I highly recommend the public range, or the many clubs that call Hosler Canyon home.
CSACannoneer could elaborate on the Agoura range closing, but let just say "multiple reasons" including but not limited to those listed above.
Oh, and another range sure would be nice. I wish the dairy farm near CSUCI wasn't turned over to the University (ILLEGALLY)Last edited by Burbur; 12-08-2012, 11:10 PM.Comment

It is amazing that with so much open
land out here that there is no place to shoot outdoors without almost leaving the county. Piru is quite a haul, I would rather go to Oaktree or Glass Factory if I am going to drive that far. But I will check it out.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

I agree it seems like there would / could be a public range anywhere between the north east end of ventura and simi valley or somewhere in the hills above T.O. But then again I think it is illegal for the kids to play with their air soft outside in TO so a range would go over like a fart in church probably. The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thingComment
