    MOA Question

I know a little about MOA, but I have a couple of questions.

I understand that MOA=1"@100yrds, so if you shot a 5 shot group into a 1" circle at 100yrds, then your rifle shoots 1MOA correct? Likewise, if every shot goes into a two-inch circle at 200yrds, then you're shooting 1 MOA also right?

Now, heres where it gets confusing for me. Say you get a 10" group at 500yrds, then how do you get 2MOA?

Is it because since 1MOA=1"@100yrds, and since your shooting 10" groups, 100x10=1000yrds, but since the group is at 500yrds, 1000/500=2 which leads to 2MOA?

    Thanks for the help!

if your are talking about shooter's moa, yes you are right. 1moa at 100yards is technically 1.047197580733 inches

The distance MOA refers to is the chord subtending the arc formed by 1 minute of circular angle (1/60th of a degree) for a given radius to the target.

As the math works out, 1MOA is about 1" @100yds, yes.

      But 1MOA is also approx 2" at 200yds, 5" @ 500yds, 10.5" @ 1000 yds. etc.

Working the math out, 1MOA @ 100yds is actually around ~1.047".
We just call it 1" 'cuz it's close enough for practical purposes.

Say your shooting 2" groups at 100yds, then would your MOA be 2MOA?

By the way 1 MOA is considered the limiting resolution for a typical person's eye. That's about as detailed as you can see using long-distance vision (YMMV depending on how good your eyes are). That is why it's the standard reference angle.

The ratio 1"/100 yards and 5" / 500 yards gives approximately the same angle, roughly 1/60 of a degree, or one arcminute (thus MOA).

The metric system has a similar measurement called milliradian. 1 mrad = 1 meter circle at 1000 meters. It is roughly 3 1/2 MOA.

So you basically multiply by 100 then divide by the range you were shooting at right?

              Check this one for me.

              1/2" groups at 50yds.

              So 0.5" x 100 = 5

              5/50 = 0.1

So your MOA is 0.1? I've heard of 1/4MOA, but 1/10MOA? Is that even possible? LOL

Hope this helps, note inch values are approx. If you were shooting 2MOA you would have to double the width of the cone all the way out, and vice-versa for 1/2MOA.

Bob Lee Swagger can do 1MOA at 1000yds. So that's actually 0.10MOA.

I've shot 5 shot group 0.10 MOA with a 700p, but averages just under half moa... its another beast at 200+ however.

You guys need to work on your math. .5" at 50 yards = 1 MOA and is equal to 1" at 100 yards (still 1 MOA). You double the value because you double the distance. And 1 MOA is 1 MOA regardless of whether it's at 100 yards or 1000yards. Only difference is 1 MOA at 100 yards = 1.047" or 1" if you're using shooters MOA (also known as IPHY - inch per hundred yard). At 1000 yards 1 MOA = 10.47" or 10" if shooters MOA.

minute of angle is a 60th of a degree. in other words, there are 360 degrees so one deg is called an angle. minute means a 60th, as in there are 60 minutes in a hour. so minute of angle means a 60th of a degree.

for perspective the moon is 30moa. a circle at 100 yards that is 30 inches across will appear the same size as the moon.
