Please settle an argument about Iron Sights

Arguing about how you line up iron sights, pretty stupid but please help settle the argument....

Place the target directly on top of the front post

Place the target completely behind front post

Target center mass center of front site is the way I have always done it, and was taught.

Works well.

I have seen diagrams of alternatives (just above) but that does not make since, as at different ranges you would have to lift up, above the target, right?

I like to see where the bullet impact "should" be...on top of post, gotta be more precise
if you can see the point of impact.

For games, some will use the lolipop hold to give a better sight picture



So if you shoot at one distance, you can intentionally screw with the elevation so a sight picture at the bottom edge of an NRA target will hit in the bulls eye.

Again- for games- same target- same distance- same shooting positions.


For self defense- do I hold on X to hit Y?

Hold as the above posted shows- top edge of rear sight if ex with top edge of front sight with impact on the same plane

You can shoot a six o'clock hold, a center hold, a gap, or a flat tire. All are acceptable.

+1, both of my ar-15's and ak have top of post to be point of impact.

Doesn't matter -- just do the same thing every time. A lot depends on your eyes and the target, but consistency is the only trick.

I see your issue. Different sources say different things...

This is what I have always done:

I like the lower example with the red targets. The upper example is what confuses many. The question with the upper example becomes, "What part of the target sits on top of the front site post, the target circles or the bullseye target circle? I prefer the lower red target examples that show the intended point of impact being the point placed on the top of the front post.

i like to see what i shoot which is why i like red dots since i can see how low i hit

with the iron sights i often adjust them so i hit high and can tell how high

i got the highest rear sight i can get for my glock 21 and i still shoot low i just dont get it at 20 yards if i aim for the heart i hit the nards

I bisect the target with the front sight blade...like in the top picture in the86d's post

Adjustable sites I always go with the top pic of 'The86' as well.

If its fixed sights, I'll take a file to that front post and make it that way.
