    epiphany!!

So I'm messing around with my Mauser, you know, looking down the iron sights and the like-- but I do something different. I shoulder it left handed and line up my left eye (I shoot righty, but wanted to see how awkward I'd feel). Then all of a sudden, the notch and the post line up perfectly, and without any odd blurring or weird focus shifts (like I end up sometimes dealing with at ranged longer than 50 yards with my right eye).

So it occurs to me "am I left eye dominant? I thought I tested myself and found my right eye to be. Could I have screwed up?" Sure enough.. I did ... so that's why I've never been that good at iron sights past 50 yards. . . at least a majority of the time and with sights other than the peep (which I seem to be at least "decent with).

So with my new found knowledge, I try aiming my pistols with my left eye... a WORLD of difference. . . I pick up my AR.... even sweeter with the peep... so now I feel the need to train my right eye to make the left eye his **** . I've googled stuff about eye dominance, but I can't seem to find info on HOW to change it..... Anyone know?

I did this about three years ago.

The quick easy way to deal with it is to put a bit of scotch tape over your left eye shooting glasses at the range. That will deal with the focusing issues.

The longer term solution is to retrain your brain and eyes to look out of your right eye. The way I did it was when I was driving, I'd blink my left eye enough to make it a bit blurry and constantly focus on looking through my right eye. At first your brain gets a bit confused and you can get disoriented so don't do this in heavy traffic. After a few weeks your right eye gets used to focusing and your brain will slowly adjust. It takes around three months of work to really reprogram your brain. You have to keep it up or your brain will shift back to being cross eye dominant.

    Good luck.

Could it be a near sighted/far sighted thing?

One of my eyes is slightly near sighted and one is slightly far sighted.
It averages out pretty well for me but I could see it being an issue when sighting.

That's the problem with myself. I am right handed but my right eye is weaker. My brain always, and will always, use my right eye over my left eye. Under these circumstances, either corrective surgery or corrective lens must be employed first before anything can happen. Otherwise it's like pushing a boulder up hill and rolling one down hill; the easy one will always win.

Well, it HAS been a while since my last eye exam, but fortunately, I'm due to have one soon (and have an apt). So we'll see how that works out. I'm fairly comfortable that my right eye still sees as well as my left (based on home versions of the tests) but we'll see. If that all works out, then all I need to do is get my brain to let my right eye take control. Thanks for the replies!

Do you know what this reminds me of....that one movie with Nicholas Cage as an Army helicopter pilot and he learns how to change eye dominance with the help of Tommy Lee Jones' character. Its the scene where he is wearing some panties covering his left eye while driving lol!!!

As for me im left eye dominant but i had to learn how to shoot right handed. BUT i didnt use the panty technique!

                lol

just trained myself to focus on the front sight while aligning with my rear one. i just closed my left eye while aiming and eventually learned how to shoot with both eyes open.

I would recommend you practice your shooting stance with a pistol and with a rifle, it might be awkward at first, but with enough practice you will become comfortable,

I knew a person that was right eye dominant but was left handed, when he first tried shooting he tried to do the eye patch, but I told him it's a genetic trait, and it's not wise to go against nature, I simply told him to change his leg planting and stance and to use his dominant eye with his left hand, he simply thought it looked awkward, I simply told him he looks awkward because he is not totally comfortable and not practicing enough. He was hitting good grouping afterwards. it's not much of a big deal, it depends on how you train, practice makes perfect, eventually it will feel natural-which is the objective.
I think my problem is that I already have to keep one eye closed (my left) and if I try both open, I'm really messed up. Just need to figure out how to CHANGE dominance.
