First time AK build

I would like to build an AK and I wanted some opinions on what route to go such as brand, stamped or milled, ect.

Any make (orgin) should shoot well if you take your time and build it correctly. A stamped flat is cheap and easy. AK Builder and the other similar sites have everything you'll need.

What area are you in? There are experienced builders all over that can help out.

Romanian G kit with an intact military barrel & all 3 (barrel trunnion, bolt carrier & bolt) matching numbers. Buy 2 receiver flats, 2 sets of rivets, side rail & your 922R parts. Go to a local build party & have fun. Don't worry if you mess up one receiver, as that's why you bought 2 of them. The only real questions is what kind of furniture & mags you will use and how you will finish the receiver. That's the easiest way to build an AK IMO.

I've got at least 10. They are easy to find, but have gone up a bit in price thanks to everyone's hero on here, W Bush & his 2005 barrel import ban. A noob would be better off paying more to not have to deal with the extra work a virgin kit requires, IMO. A military barrel will not have any of the possible quality issues an aftermarket commercial barrel can have.

How's this for horrors: grind the edges of the barrel trunnion rivets off. Cut the receiver at the bottom & peel the receiver shell away leaving 6 rivet "posts" sticking out of the trunnion. Fold the flat around the trunnion & then weld around the posts. This way you don't have to pull the barrel. Sometimes the barrel pin can be a PITA to remove. With a TIG welder you can make the welds look pretty decent. You can also drill & tap the barrel trunnion and use screws.

You would have to check GunBroker to be sure, but I would guess around $350 & worth every penny. To me unregistered guns like home built ones are worth double than what they sell for at retail.
