Unless it's a C&R rifle older than 50 years, it doesn't work at all in California.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

In CA it has to be a C&R rifle long gun over 50 years old. Some C&R rifles do not meet the age requirement.

But yes if they are both residents of CA and if neither are an FFL then there is no paperwork, no wait.

        Penal Code 27965
        (a) If all of the following requirements are satisfied, Section 27545 does not apply to the sale, loan, or transfer of a firearm:
        (1) The sale, loan, or transfer is infrequent, as defined in Section 16730.
        (2) The firearm is not a handgun.
        (3) The firearm is a curio or relic manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date but is not a replica, as defined in Section 478.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations, or its successor.
        (b) This section shall remain in effect only until January 1, 2014, and as of that date is repealed, unless a later enacted statute, that is enacted before January 1, 2014, deletes or extends that date.

Good point, I miss spoke. Rifles and Shotguns.

I'd love to find a good deal on a C&R Winchester Model 12 or Ithaca 37

Also keep in mind that "cash & carry" type transfers will no longer be legal for most people starting 01-01-2014.
After which, the exemption only applies to people with a C&R FFL & a COE.
