    scored a firesafe on craigslist

I needed some more safe storage so i went looking on cragislist. i got this 3 foot x 2 foot commercial firesafe for 80 bucks, it was open but no combo. i had it checked out with local PD and its clean. Liberty would give me the combo for 30 bucks but i opted to go electronic and got a factory refurbished electronic combo on epay for fifty bucks.in fact i bought 3 combos and changed all my safes over, ill never go back to dials! so im into it a buck and a quarter. Its a nice safe, perfect for pistols docs ect and its very heavy.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I've always been curious, if it did survive a fire, would the combo pad be burned/boogered up beyond use? If so, how would you get in?

you would have the same problem with a dial safe, but the contents are what important. I can get into ANY safe with my plasma cutter.....
There are ways to get in, the pros do it all the time for a lost combo, but it takes some time and know how

Think the info is stored on the inside, also if the keypad got hammered you can just swap it out without drilling. Thats what i have heard but not sure how true that is for all models.

you are right, if the keypad got torched and the mechanism is still in tact i can get another keypad and access the safe. The combo is stored on the mechanism

If you can just swap keypads and get into your safe........get rid of it and buy a better one. What's keeping a knowledgeable theif from bringing a keypad and opening it up? My Winchester safe stores the combo inside the door. The keypad just tells the "brain" to unlock the mechanism.

They cant get in unless they know the combo, thats the way they ALL work i an can guarantee my comob(s) are made by the same mfg that makes your winchester safe combo, there is only 2, sargeant/greenlee and legard so they work the same way if you read my previous posts.

Ditto. Absolutely great deal! Only into it for a little over one hundred, and you own a safe that's cheaper and better than anything else out there for that price.

No one said to just swap the keypad and magically open the safe. They meant if the external keypad were destroyed, you could get a replacement, connect it, and enter the correct combination.

As far as getting into the safe after a fire, probably not first on the priority list and since it's your safe you could pay someone to do it(or cut it open yourself).

edit: That's a damn good deal for $80 plus a few extra to change the keypad out.

thanks, cruise craigslist each day, you will find many deals if you look and are first on the scene.
Really, the last thing i would be worried about after losing my house to a fire is my safe. I know the contents are secure and i can get into it in a variety of ways.
Also if the keypad was torched there's a bigger problem, the cable connecting the keypad would be smoked as well and how do you plug a new one back in without be able to get in? cut and splice? depends and how far it got burned back.
I dont worry about those things, as i said i would have much bigger worries and insurance would pay for a new safe after i did what i had to do getting into it and rescue my valuables.

Sorry, I misunderstood. You said "mechanism" - that's a mechanical component in my line of work, not even capable of storing a combo.
