Red LED flashlight- low intensity help???

Something like you would use to read a map.....

Once in a great while, I participate in night shoots. I need to be able to read my dope charts, and adjust my scope in the dark with a dim light that wont ruin night vision. A red low intensity LED that takes common batteries would be ideal....

I just did one of these shoots a few weeks ago. Of all things, toy star trek led lights from cereal boxes are what I packed. They worked fine, but awkward shape and switch location, and non replaceable batteries....

I dont need enough light to read a book, just carefully point the light and reference a chart, and click the scope... a single dim red LED fits this purpose well.

Anyone know where I could buy a decent light like this that takes common batteries like AA or AAA?

Otherwise, eventually I'll break down and order an LED and solder something together on my own....

Pretzel 2 or 3 led headlamp from any good sporting goods store.
Look at the ones with the flip-down red lens.

Thanks Randall. I'll look for that.

Any other products? I'd like a 'pen light' to leave in my log book as well. (Just in case...)

I purchased LED key chain lights from ebay
I attached velcro with sticky tape to the light and my receiver

Low light to navigate underbrush with and easy to stick onto range gear velcro

Thats 'kind of' what I used last time, which worked fine... but I'd like something with common, replacable batteries. AA or AAA would be great. That way, I can use rechargeables and keep alkalines for backup.

            Thanks though.

I have one of those 'star trek' cereal box lights with velcro by my front door to see the deadbolt at night when I dont have the porch light on. Seriously.... they are 'star trek' themed lights literally from cereal boxes!!!

Woot had a deal on this thing for 55 bucks a while back.

It's a good light. LEDs are pretty bright, and the red LED gives off a nice amount of light, but not too much. It feels like it's well made (not like the S&W branded knives), and has rattled around a cupholder in my car for a few months with no issues.

This unit uses one AA and has two leds for red and a single for blue and then two options for white light.

This is the best design I have found. it is truly a useful light and blue and red do not effect your night vision.
