I'm confused about BLM shooting rules.

On one hand I've read stuff that leads me to think it is legal to shoot guns except under certain circumstances. In other words, if you away from anyone or anything and it isn't fire season it is OK to shoot?

But I also here about various "shoot areas" and particular "ranges" that seem to be just loosely defined areas that are kinda handy to shoot in a certain direction with natural backstop etc, and worries about them maybe getting closed, etc.

I haven't found any official maps from BLM of "shooting areas".

This is for target practice, not hunting.

And what about rules for shooting while hunting VS target shooting? Besides having lic/tags/etc is there any diff in the areas you can shoot?

(I'm sorta of aware you might get "in trouble" if you seem to be hunting and don't got right tags/lic)

I picked up a BLM map when I first got back to California. Bass Pro Shop. Cost me 7 dollars I believe

BLM doesn't set shooting regulations in California. Each county has it's own shooting ordnance's that applies to all unincorporated areas in their county. This includes national forests and BLM lands. So the shooting regulations on BLM lands change from county to county.

There's a whole thread on shooting in BLM/National forests: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=186457

There are some "prohibited areas" to keep an eye out for, even on land where shooting is generally allowed.
