    Document Requirements for Handgun Purchase

I turn 21 soon, and I am intent on getting a new handgun to celebrate. I have looked extensively on other threads and learned quite a bit over the past few years. But I would like to get your opinion on this specific situation.

I recently moved from one family members house to another. My DMV ID is from the the old address. I do not have another government issued ID with my current address. I do not pay rent, and the vehicles I drive are all registered to my parents. However, I do pay for a utility, the internet. So from my understanding the utility bill will work, but I need to have a DMV ID with my current address.

So should I walk into DMV and say:
"Hello, I lost my Drivers License and need a new one. And I also need to update the address."

Will the new Drivers License and internet utility bill work for the documents required to get a handgun?

PS: How long has the turn around been lately for DMV mailing out stuff?

Since you have some time, just go in and get a change of address done to your license, also get a state issued ID card. Done

Well that solves the gov issued ID problem. Thank you for your help.

btw, your utility bill will work if it has your address of residence on it (matches CA ID).

I have to do this as most of my bills go to a P.O. Box.

Im 23 and got my handgun when I turned 21 so hopefully I can help answering your question for proof of residency documents.

Besides having your driver's license as your primary proof of residency, you will need a secondary form.

Depending on your FFL and how well they will accept certain forms of documents, here is what has worked with me. As a college student, these tend to work:

              W2 forms
              financial aid (FAFSA) forms
utility bill (water, electrical, lease agreement)

Key to remember is that your CA driver's license needs to match any form you use as secondary.
