So I was wondering if any of the Cowboy Action Shooters, or anyone else, on here can explain something to me.

In "Undefeated" John Wayne wears this pistol belt with two long cartridges in the middle of his .44-40 ammo. Why would he do this? If he were shooting .44-40 in his rifle, he wouldn't need it but if he were shooting the longer cartridge, he'd probably need more than are in the belt.
So is their a real world explanation for this or can it just be chalked up to hollywood?
