So in addition to 'stopping power' we now have 'fire power'. Both evil things that must be stopped for sake of the children.

22lr once it enters bounces off bones and ricochets in the body, that's why it's deadly.

Huh... .22 pistols were THE caliber of choice for many mob hitmen and other old school criminals. They're small, they're not loud, and at close range, they're lethal. Ask Italians - favorite method of execution by the mob was a .22 to the ear, the eye or the neck.

My wife recently worked a case where a guy killed his brother with a .22 rifle. Shot to the heart. Guy died immediately. This kind of stuff is common.

There is some truth to that. I'm in an EMT class this semester and the instructor has been a paramedic for a local ambulance company for 18 years 5 of those years he was a flight paramedic. We regularly talk about guns (he's an avid shooter and currently a medic for the swat team) and he said the worst gun shots he has seen are from medium velocity rounds (small pistol and rimfire rounds) due to the fact that most of the time they don't go straight through people like a high velocity round like a .223 or larger/faster round does. High velocity rounds do create more "cavitation" in soft tissue, but they also generally go straight through a body. Medium velocity rounds tend to deflect off bones and dramatically change direction instead of breaking a bone, so you can have a .22 hit someone in the pelvis and end up in the upper torso.

gang firearm crime related casualties amongst police officers are often with small caliber rounds like .22LR and .25ACP due to cost and conceal ability.

This was a huge thing in the 90's when the Hitman Manual was released

It bounces and worse yet, it fragments easily and is a mess to clean up. Plus those little fragments frequently pierce body parts and cause lots of complications.
