I just picked up my new Glock 21 a couple of weeks ago, and I was wondering something- when I walk into a gun shop, is it like buying a car and I can negotiate a better price? I've bought one pistol previous and didn't think to ask then either. I hate the whole car-buying process and would prefer to just have the price be the price. However my GF is a bit of a haggler and tries to get a better deal practically everywhere. So on a new pistol from a dealer, what's the custom?

Negotiating a price

Each shop is a little different. Big box shops like Turner's have set prices. Manager's can often make exceptions if there's a special circumstance, but for the most part their prices are set. Smaller shops sometimes have some wiggle room, especially if you're dealing with the owner themselves. I wouldn't expect to get too much off though, the profit margins are already small enough these days, and we should support our local gun shops with our business. -
i think it more depends on the shop, Turners in corona gave me there last sale price on the gun because it was my birthday when i bought my handgun but i didn't ask. all thats gonna happen is they say no and your in the same position you were.Selling lots of Pistol brass, lots of 38 and 44 mag!

With a small shop, it all depends the way you talk to sales person. Many times you can get a small discount, especially if paying cash as opposed to credit card.Comment

There's not a lot of mark up on new guns. Between 10-20% is pretty normal and the larger gun shops get better bulk prices if they're "Master" dealers.
Used guns are usually easier to work with on price because they will pick them up at half of what they usually can sell them for.
Some gun shops will match others prices, but probably won't go further down from there. Also, if you become a regular and bring in referrals some shops will even give their best customers guns and other accessories at cost.
I worked at a local range and ran their gun shop for three years over a decade ago. I still get to shoot for free and get everything at cost because I still bring in customers

Thanks for the weigh-ins. I certainly didn't feel it was a bad price, I just have zero frame of reference since I'm new to the gun world and don't follow it.Comment

I just simply ask if there are any discounts available if I purchase today. If they say no I say too bad I would buy it but the price is slightly more than I wanna pay. Gun shops will always have salesComment

When I was at oaktree I asked if their used firearms were negotiable. I got a very convoluted answer. Basically since the manufacturers had such high demands their prices were "firm"....so I said ok and left. Just depends on the store, dont be afraid to ask.Comment

I base my prices off the internet, certain sites. The owner asks me the best price I find then he beats it. If he can't get the gun for some reason, then he does the transfer for $15!It's ok to be jealous. We understand your animosity. We live the life you wish you had. And of over 4000 universities and over 1700 division 1 schools, only one is simply known as "The U"Comment
