    Ammo storage

So I am on a ammo kick right now, just passing 12k rounds, what is the best way to store it all?

I am keeping the brass ammo together (mostly reloads) in ammo cans.

My wolf and other cheap ammo together in other ammo cans (all organized by caliber ).

Should I keep the ammo in the original boxes? or just empty them out into the ammo cans with the moisture packets?

I wanted to just poor all of my .22lr into ammo cans (5k rounds), removing them from the original boxes.

I hate going out shooting and having all the trash, I would much rather just pop a can open and grab hand fulls of fun.

I would also like to keep an emegency stash ready to go, but would like a long shelf life.

    Any input is appreciated.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of excercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate excercise to the body, it gives independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are to violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks." Thomas Jefferson to Peter Carr, 1785.

Dry ammo does not expire. I was shooting ammo from 1913 in my Enfield last year. No problems.

Wow, and I thought I was doing good shooting rounds I reloaded back in 1985! Good to know!

Keep all your ammo in their original boxes -- it's easier for identification, handling, and if needed resale.

Add desiccant packets to your SHTF stash in airtight ammo boxes.

Store that ammo in your gun safe as it's good as cash.

I store all my ammo in ammo cans. Sorted by caliber.

I shot some .32 acp from the 1930's that was my grandfathers

The bullets were all green and some were fuzzy
The brass was.... Tarnished... Or so 1 might say

In the original box. Stored in a drawer

            It all fired
About 1/3 ejected with a split case

Keep ammo dry and it should last a long time

Air tight cases/ ammo cans are even better

I keep all my ammo in ammo cans as well, but I just keep everything in its original packaging. When I go to the range I like to grab a few boxes and put them directly into my range bag.

I like the idea of emptying all the .22 into an ammo can, but then again, that means you'll have to always take the ammo can to the range (vs the individual/smaller boxes of .22).

I dump My ammo in in ammo cans with some desiccant on the bottom then seal it with duct tape. I don't have anything old but all my stuff from 10 years ago looks great and shoots with no problems

                  Ammo in can by caliber.

I have range ammo and "SHTF" ammo in seperate cans.

I store all my ammunition in a combination of metal and plastic ammo cans, minus some ammo I've yet to buy cans for... including 420 rounds in an opened Mosin spam can, 120 rounds of Mosin ammo in retail packaging/box in a cardboard box, and 500 rounds of Wolf 7.62 x 39mm in retail packaging/box & sealed in plastic in a cardboard box.

Most of my ammo is still packaged in the original retail packaging/box, but I do have some loose ammo covering all calibers, except .22LR, though I do have a few hundred rounds of some older Federal .22LR loose in a double zip lock bag.

I'm not sure if the ammo being in the original retail packaging/box or loose will make a difference, but in my opinion and in my situation, I have stopped storing my ammunition loose. I just like being able to have a box. I feel it's easier to organize and I like to know exactly what I have and exactly what I'm shooting (brand, grain, etc). I try to organize by brand and caliber.

All that said, I'm always looking for more efficient ways to store my ammunition. I'm currently trying to find a good deal on bulk desiccant packs I like to use for oxygen/moisture absorption while being stored (also good for gun storage, tools, etc. basically anything metal).

Oh, also like to note my ammunition is kept in a closet, which maintains a fairly regular temperature and humidity level, and no direct sun light.

My ammo is in caliber/type-specific metal ammo cans with desiccant packets.
