I am just curious to hear how other people document their serial numbers and accessories they may have on their weapons. I like to take two pictures, one of the complete rifle, and a close up of the serial number, then I put them together on the same page in a three ring binder. Let's hear what you have to say!

How do you document your weapons?

I have pictures and all receipts in a folder in a filing cabinet. I also emailed the serial numbers to myself so if my paperwork was stolen, I have all info stored online. I also have pics stored online as well as pictures of all valuables inside my house for insurance backup in case my home was to burn or be destroyed.
I don't expect everything handed to me. Just set it down anywhere. Unknown -
I keep a list on computer with make, model, serial number, and value.
I keep the receipts and owners manuals in a file in my desk at home.
I keep the guns separate and in a safe.
Do not keep your paperwork in the safe with the guns. A good friend of mine did this and ended up having his whole safe stolen. He could not produce all of the serial numbers for the police report.
Pics are nice, but receipts are better. If you have the serial numbers and a police report, I think your insurance co. should be satisfied if you need to make a claim. Also, some insurance carriers want appraisals if you have a higher dollar collection.

Hold onto your DROS papers, receipts, and invoices (esp. if you bought the gun out-of-state).
Record all of your gun's serial numbers into notebooks.
Keep image files of your guns, and keep them up to date at least every 6 months. Update sooner if you accessorize them/spend more money on them or if any significant cosmestic changes occur. In Glock We Trust.

I keep a copy of my DROS paper, take a picture of the gun drop it in a layout that has the serial number, name of the gun, caliber, purchase price, year of mfg, any additional work that was done to it, if it comes with original box and papers and any accessories and or extras. Keep it all in a binder. I also make an additional set and keep it away from home for insurance reasons. As well as a digital version on my computer and CD backups.Last edited by razr; 11-02-2012, 3:31 PM.Don't take refuge in the false security of consensus.

Sure, the serial number is recorded in my records, but I record way more than just that. I collect certain types of guns, so I'm interested in stampings, features, differences among the different types.
When I shop for collectibles on line, I have to consult these records. I think I stopped being able to remember it all after perhaps the second Mauser...Then I got a Mosin...ah, well. Getting old is OK, considering the alternative...

In the case of something like a Mauser or Mosin that does not have matching numbers, do you record all of them? Just curious.
I have a spreadsheet file *somewhere*, but should probably put together more extensive documentation.Just taking up space in (what is no longer) the second-worst small town in California.Comment

I keep all my DROS paperwork and receipts in a separate safe from my guns. I also have scans of my paperwork as well as pictures stored in my computer as well as an external hard drive that stays in the safe with the paperwork.Comment

For all you guys who keep your DROS paperwork, do you own long guns which were DROSed? If so, what food does the paperwork do you?NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I have a file in my computer, but emailing it to myself give access to unauthorised viewers. The safest is probably just a printed out file then delete the original. Don't li,e my firearms list floating in the clouds. This year will go down in history.... Don't want to offend anybodyComment

I have almost all original paper work, which has also been scanned to my computer, with detailed pics of all guns including s/n and any distinguishing/identifying marks. All this is then stored on 2 flash drives with one staying at home in a fire safe, and the other in a safe deposit box.sigpic
