a start up needs some money

I am not going to get to deep into this, so here it go's. A podcaster that I listen to on a regular basis needs some money to get his business going. I would think he would contact the professionals that he plans on referring and asking them for a donation in exchange for listing them on the site.
However, in a real world situation I think he needs to pony up the money himself first, and then ask for donations based on how many people he connects with the professionals.
Really, how much money does it take to set up a website anyway? The real money comes in advertising and promotion.
