NORTHRIDGE - Authorities today identified a 65-year-old man who committed suicide at a Northridge shooting range by shooting himself in the head.

Richard Mackay of Tarzana was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. John Kadas of the coroner's office said.

The shooting occurred around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Firing-Line indoor shooting range at 18348 Eddy St., where Mackay rented a 9-mm pistol, police said.

Mackay had joined the target shooting club several weeks ago, said Sgt. Bruce Vermaat of the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station.

Arriving firefighters pronounced the man dead of a gunshot wound to the head, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The shooting range is in an industrial area about a half-mile south of Cal State Northridge.

Falsely accusing someone of having culpability in the death of another person is both irresponsible and reprehensible. IMO, you fit both categories.

I called it a Jihad because you are using the same logic the islamic fundamentalists use to justify their hatred. They think somebody wronged them so they carry on a lifelong vendetta. How silly.

Here in the Bay Area ranges, they require a minimum of two people of you're going to rent firearms to prevent stuff like this from happening.

The same rule is in effect at the ranges down here. The exception is a yearly member who may rent a gun by himself. In this case, the guy was a member.

FWIW, the two person rule does inhibit the suicides but doesn't prevent it. The last two I went through was with two sisters and two college age friends. There is no way to prevent suicides at shooting ranges. All you can do is make it harder. Doing it in front of a friend, relative, or even strangers is a very very selfish act and deserves no sympathy.
