Single DROS for handgun & long gun(s)

I'm trying to optimize my fee payments here and I was hoping someone might be able to help. I know you can DROS multiple long guns at once, but can you also DROS a single handgun at the same time?

    Thanks in advance!

I think Stormfeather misread what you said.

You can buy as many long guns as you please on one DROS as long as it is done at the time of purchase. Once you sign the 4473, you cannot change your mind and add more guns (per the 4473 instructions). You can however, start a new DROS immediately for more long guns. You may start a DROS for more long guns in 30 minutes, 4 hours, two days, 29 days. Long gun DROS is not limited in anyway except once you sign the 4473 your number of long guns is set.

You may at the same time start another DROS for a handgun. However, you are limited to only one dealer DROSed handgun (PPTs are exempt) every 30 days (30 24 hour periods). Do not try to DROS handguns in different shops hoping they won't figure it out. The DOJ knows everything about handgun DROS and will reject you and at the least, your $25 goes down the drain if not more depending on who the FFL is and what he charges.

There are some people who claim it is lawful to use a handgun DROS as a background check for long guns at the same time. I personally do not do that at my shop. I do one handgun DROS and that one handgun is all that goes on that transaction. You will need to contact your FFL to see if he thinks using a handgun DROS as your background check for your long guns is legal and whether he does that or not.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

Ok thanks a lot guys! I'm just about to pick up my first 1911 (I'm really pumped ) and I'd been thinking about adding an AK to my collection too, but it looks like there's no hurry. I'll give my FFL dealer a ring later today just to see what his policy is, but at least now I have an idea of what to expect. Thanks for the quick answers!

I'll go the hypothetical "friend" did this route, but he recently had a handgun and long gun DROS'd at the same time, same shop, single ($35.00 total) charge for both.

                Here's a related question:

I bought 2 OLLs a few months back. When I went in to pick them up after 10 days, the FFL said I could buy any long gun in his shop and take it home that day. He said a long gun DROS is valid and "open" for 30 days, so any time within that 30 days, I could buy another long gun w/o having to do another DROS and 10 day wait. Is that correct? Thanks.

I doubt it. I'm not saying it never happens, but I don't think it's legal. As 10% said, you aren't supposed to add long guns to a DROS after you have signed it.

FFLs cannot add additional long funs once they have signed off your guns on collection after the 10 day wait. If you add additional long guns to the Dealer Record Of Sale after being signed off the number of long guns has to be changed. Any visible changes will raise red flags during a DoJ audit. The FFL is opening themselves to the accusations of selling guns to felons, criminals, or terrorists "under the table" and then concealing the sale by adding the record of that long gun to a previous customer's DROS.

You can in theory, log as many long guns as you want onto the same DROS form at the time of starting your 4473. I have heard of 20 long guns on one $25 DROS. Perfectly legal, but it will throw up red flags with CA DoJ who may certainly decide to put you on some kind of "keep a close eye on" list, and / or may advise your local LE agency to do the same thing.

I was advised that, if you wish to stay under the DoJ "radar", keep your DROSs down to at most 4 or 5 long guns at a time.

Life can make you do many things, even kiss a man with a runny nose.

yea i always wanted to try a rifle whenever plan at a gunshop just do a dros every 20 days andyou could in theory pick up a rifle without a waiting period after the first 10 days (it would cost about $425 a year ,for only $1.17 a day you could pick up a rifle from the store whenever you want ,less than a cup of coffee, insert third world baby with a fly on their face image)

also is there any rule that says you cant change your mind about the other 5 rifles you were going to buy with the dros?

I have an FFL, and you CAN add long guns to a handgun DROS, but once you sign off on it, it's closed. The issue is that EACH HANDGUN had to be on it's own DROS.

Thanks for the info folks. I thought it sounded a little too good to be true, but given how confusing the laws are here, I thought perhaps it was a creative interpretation of the DROS rules.
