    Question about a PPT...

So I met with someone to do the transfer on my AR 15, and the guy at the counter told US that we did not need to do one since longguns are not registered, that he can just take the gun. Does thismsound right? I mean, how would you know the guy buying it doesn't have a criminal record or what not?

The guy is an idiot. While long guns are not registered, that is no reason not to follow the law. Unless the long gun in question is over 50 years old (obviously this one is not), a PPT is mandatory under CA law.

Incorrect. It must go through a FFL. Find a gun shop that knows what they are doing.

Go to another CA FFL dealer, because that one is telling you to break the law.

Since 1991, all firearm transfers must be done through a CA FFL dealer.
          Exemptions...
          ... intra-familial gifts
... transfers of rifles/shotguns that are 50+ years old.

          Penal Code 26500
          (a) No person shall sell, lease, or transfer firearms unless the person has been issued a license pursuant to Article 1 (commencing with Section 26700) and Article 2 (commencing with Section 26800) of Chapter 2.
          (b) Any person violating this article is guilty of a misdemeanor.

          Penal Code 27545
Where neither party to the transaction holds a dealer's license issued pursuant to Sections 26700 to 26915, inclusive, the parties to the transaction shall complete the sale, loan, or transfer of that firearm through a licensed firearms dealer pursuant to Chapter 5 (commencing with Section 28050).

It just leaves me to wonder how many people walked out of there with rifles without going thru a background check

Happened to me at a local shop when I bought my Mossburg Tactical 22. (Same shop that sold me the off roster pistol later).

Unfortunately I was too big of a noob to know any better.

Would you either name the shop here or PM it to me. I'm thinking it might be the same shop that outright lied about a phone conversation I had with them and has caused a lot of needless trouble for a LEO in the area. If it's the same shop, this info could help the LEO out.
