This afternoon, I was chatting with my neighbor's brother, who happens to be a CHP. In our conversation, he brought up a situation in which he had to shoot a deer that had been hit by a car. He complained the M16A1 he had been issued shot about a foot low at close range.
I asked the officer at what distance they had zero'd their rifles. He told me they had done it at 50 yards.
Anybody that went to basic training will tell you the zero range is 25 meters. That puts you dead on at close range, and also dead on a man-sized target at center mass hold out to 300 meters, and that's why they designed the A1 the way they did. Idiot-proof sights.
If you zero at 50 yards, an A1 will shoot very low at close range.
After advising the young CHP to re-zero at 25M, I thought about the implications of all those A1's riding around in CHP units that are zero'd at 50 yards. A chill ran down my spine.
