    Capacity vs Caliber

Ok so we all know that the kalifornistan 10 round mag limit influences our pistol purchases. So since we are limited we may as well have the biggest round we can get. Since 10 rounds of .45 is better than 10 of 9mm the choice is usually obvious. With that being said if mag limits were no longer an issue would you rather go with say a 9mm with 17 round mags or a .45 with 13 rounders?(glock 21 & 17 for examples). Would you go go the higher capacity pistols or stick to higher calibers? I know they make extended magazines for most calibers, but most 9mm pistols tend to have higher mag capacity OTB.

It's times like when Fascist-fornia's oppressive mag capacity limit that I'm glad I stick with 9mm... in a compact handgun.

The Ruger SR9c has a stock 10 round mag which is just under 4'' long, which makes carrying spare mags a breeze in most casual attire if the firearm were LTC'd.

Capacity > Caliber in about 90% of cases.

With mainstream calibers like 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP, with the right JHP ammo, they all perform within near same performance:

I used to be a .45 proponent over the wimpy 9mm.

Then the 10mm (which I'm still very accurate with, I think it's the gun), which I'd still be shooting if it wasn't for the price of ammo. Something magical about the G20.

Then the .40 came out and I gave that a try. It went well, as for a long time I trained with it and was better with it than 9mm.

Then I pulled out more of my 9mm guns and trained more with them due to the ever rising cost of ammo. SAME guns, in different calibers.

I realized that although I was better with my .40 at the time, it took a LOT of effort to shoot fast and accurate.

As I trained more with 9mm, I realized I could not only shoot the same with less effort, it also required less maintenance to stay at the same level.

I now shoot much less often than before, but stay decent by my standards.

Overall, I think that the round's ability to penetrate is what matters most. If it expands AND penetrates, even better. I would think the cutting mechanism in Ranger Talon is going to add to it's effectiveness.

That said, I prefer HST in 9mm, Ranger Talon in .45, Doubletap 200 grain FMJ in 10mm (1275 fps), pretty much anything in .40 that's 165-180.

10 rounds of 9mm I can place on target accurately > 10 rounds of a caliber I'm not as accurate with due to higher recoil

I'm also FAR more accurate with a revolver with minimal effort than ANY semi.

That said, my standards are probably pretty low.

Well OTB nothing you have said is more than a troll post, and I am happy to accommodate you in this thread.

          Pistols suck...
Actual research proves the 9mm, 40, and 45 are nearly identical in wounding ballistics as they relate to human flesh and trauma. The minor size difference has little overall effect as seen in the MILLIONS of emergency rooms around the country.

The speed of the projectile plays just as much as the size, but overall they are all the same.

          CM hits
Trauma to a vital organ produces the same effect...death from blood loss. It doesnt matter what size the hole is, as long as its in the right place. The ever so slightly larger wound cavity plays little here because all the internal organs can hold up to this force without incurring serious damage. The outer edge of the secondary cavity seen in ballistics gel caused by the shockwave is not what happens in a real human. A hole in the human heart the size of a #2 pencil produces the same effect as a hole the size of your thumb.

          CNS hits
Once again... same same. While the secondary channel caused by shockwaves does damage brain tissue, its not doing anything more then the projectiles channel. A person has just as much a chance to live with a 9mm shot to the head as they do with a 45....nearly zero% If the 0.1% greater chance of living after a head shot with a 9mm worries you, then the 0.1ms slower follow up shot/ recovery time of the 45 should too.

I guess it would be a high cap 9. Glock 34 comes to mind. Seems the round that the shooter is the most comfortable shooting is the key.

A hit is a hit... That being said if I have a garantee of only having to need 3 shots or 5 I'd go with a 357 or 45 just for that extra tissue damage.

But I have faith in all 9mm..45.. 40.. 357.. And 10... But like said above the amount of effort to keep anything other than 9mm is a bit of a pain (45 in a heavier gun like a 1911 is manageable too) but I wouldn't trust a 1911 for HD as of yet due to seeing a lot having FTE issues and being picky (yes I know some eat anything but ive seen just about the same amount not eat anything but let's stay on topic)

So to me its what are you trading off for that slightly bigger bullet for a little bit more tissue damage.. What you give up in follow up shots and control isn't worth the little bit extra.. So I stick to a good HP HD some round in 9mm and call it good.

Running a Glock 17 with Black tallon (cop killers) HP.

Followed up by a 4" GP100 with some 38 spcl HP ammo.. Looking to upgrade to some Hornady TAP HD in 38 if they have it... 38 is also a almost perfect medium HD round due to it being soft shooting but still has some good tissue damage.. But again I still favor the 9mm slight more than the 38.
