    Decent & practical body armor?

    Where to start...

    A lot of choices...

Not looking for plates and swat crazyness, just a normal vest that would offer standard protection such as what the average LEO is wearing.

Tons of models @ this site... http://www.galls.com/CGBCSRCH

ummmm....how about why not? If there is nothing illegal about the purchase or possession, why does the OP need to provide justification? Does there need to be a reason other than "because"? It's interesting to note where folks draw the line of justification for certain items. Would you have responded the same if the OP has asked for a "decent & practical" 9mm?

Maybe the OP is a hunter and would prefer to avoid someone else's poor aim (maybe not wearing orange) that we seem to read about each season. Or maybe the OP shoots at Target Masters and it tired of being swept by inexperienced or careless shooters. I see an RSO at my range that wears one under his orange vest.

The why makes a difference. A typical LEO wears soft armor. A hunter does not hunt with a pistol caliber rifle.

I think with the OP's original description of
"Not looking for plates and swat crazyness, just a normal vest that would offer standard protection such as what the average LEO is wearing."
the "why" is irrelevant as he's stating specifically the type (comparable to LEO issue, standard protection) he's looking for. Sounds like he's more interested in brand/mfg than categories of protection you listed above. Or add the category "Law Enforcement" to your list and that will meet his stated need.

Maybe this would help the OP: http://www.pointblankarmor.com/lawEn.../leLanding.php

There are plenty of people who hunt with a pistol, but I'd agree that "hunter" generally refers to rifle caliber. But since the OP mentions specifically the general type LEO wears...I'd say that answers the usage type question.

I may be far off but he may want one to protect himself from being shot with some standard most commonly shot pistol rounds. Just a far guess but you never know.

Not to keep this going but LEO's usually have hard armor in their trunk.

The why is very relevant considering all the bad that can happen with the wrong BA....and even all the bad that can happen if you are wearing BA and draw LEO attention...

                      the WHY is very important...

opie4386, all LEO's around here (Orange County) wear III-A. I actually have not heard or talked to a department around that runs anything less, but that may be due to better funding. Every department I've worked for has never even thought of wearing less. When it comes to equipment, I like to use what I would count on to protect my life best. OP, go for a III-A vest, just in case. You can find some affordable used ones on ebay, but verify manufacture date etc. Even if it is slightly past expired, the vest is still good for several years. The "expiration" is more for warranty and insurance reasons. Old kevlar has still been found to live up to its expectations.
