HTF do you forget your rifle?

Went out to the range this morning. Been there a few hours, so I walked down to admire someones rifle during a cease fire. Jaw with him for a few, and we notice a pretty nice bolt action with a Luepold scope on it just sitting on the bench next to him. So he asked if it's mine. Nope. He asked the kid a couple benches down. Nope. Well SOB who's is it? Guess some one at some point decided to go home and leave their nice .223 bolt action and half a box of ammo behind. How the hell does one do that? I mean besides the wife giving birth or being in a car wreck(even these aren't good excuses), how do you go the shooting range and leave your gun there when you leave?

    Good Lord some people.

I had a Marine of mine who left his M16 in the little PX trailer that was set up in Kuwait just a week before we crossed the boarder into Iraq in '03. Well, the Rgt SgtMaj found it and he was remediated in his deficiencies.

Often I go to the range and see others come with a 5-10 firearms. I always wonder how them keep track of them all.

During a two week field exercise in Germany (... '90? 89?) one person left/forgot their M16 in the woods somewhere. Our entire 1000+ batallion had the pleasure of staying out there searching for it for days and days, eventually a farmer returned it - he found it propped up against a tree.

HA, seen that done! A 2ndLt (take it easy, we were all butter bars) left a M249 saw in the woods of Quantico, on the last night of our op. Yea, we didn't get out of there for a WHILE!

I guess it's possible if you carry them everywhere or just a have a LOT of rifles

Werent you a mustang tho? You know that the rifle is your lifeline to survival. Leaving it propped up against a tree, in the PX, leaned against the crapper is not acceptable. Personally, I left mine leaned against the crapper. . . . (I was a Pfc) thats why I have such huge shoulders and arms, did lots and lots and lots and lots of pushups that day.

Chatting with the staff of a pretty popular range in this area, they said that it's pretty common. Guys go shoot once or so a year, they finish up, take down their target, hit the head and leave. Then they toss their (empty) rifle case back in the closet for another 3 months or a year, never realizing that their rifle is sitting in the range office waiting for them to realize that they haven't seen it since their last trip...

Yep, I'm a mustang (as the name implies) and I have never left a weapon, but have seen it a lot. In the treeline it was dark and the Lt had it strapped to his pack and an m16 as a primary (don't ask, it's an IOC thing) and when we sat for a break the crappy SAW sling came unclipped. He stood up, didn't check and off into the woods we went. Get to the objective and OOPS!

Maybe that person had ate a really bad breakfast burrito in the morning. Then got stuck in the porta-potty. Did anyone check to look there?

Ditto... My son still gives me crap about that trip to range!
If you know how many guns you have... you don't have enough guns.

Never. But I did think of confiscating the ammo.

Just curious, is it possible for you to bring your rifle into the porta-potty when you go? I mean, train as you fight, right? If you're going to be in enemy territory, I sure as heck am going to take all my bathroom breaks WITH my firearms loaded and ready - so I would train taking these breaks with my items so that when the time comes, I'd be ready to poop & scoot in a flash without ever having to leave my weapon unattended. I am not a soldier, so this is just my uninformed, non-experienced opinion.
