Anyone bought a gun on CG that didn't work?

Has anyone bought a gun off the marketplace here, FTF, and come to find out it didn't work? It's not a good idea to scam a gun enthusiast but some people are very silly.

I imagine it's a rare occurrence, but how does one prevent something like this?

I bought a glock 17 that had so much crud in the firing pin channel I wouldn't be surprised if it has a lot of light strikes and wouldn't fire. But I cleaned it before I shot it so I will never know.

I traded a rifle for a Buckmark that would eject the magazine after a shot. Simple $3 fix. I suspect that's why the "one sided" trade value

I purchased an AR from a guy (who is still selling items right now in the market place) - said he had built and fired the rifle and put 200 rounds through it without any failures. First time I shot the gun it had issues, FTE problems. Contacted him, he again said it worked great for him with his ammo. He offered to meet and shoot the gun to show me, but I wasn't available.

When I attempted to put the BCG in to my other AR I immediately found the problem, the BCG was bent. Seeing that I had only taken the gun to the range a single time, and the first round I put through it (and every subsequent round) was a FTE the BCG was bent when he sold it to me. Replaced the BC (kept his bolt assembly) - gun works fine now.

Purchased a manufacturer rifle / scope combo from a guy and had the scope crap out first time out at the range - I don't blame the seller, more so the low end Burris scope.

Purchased a Ruger Vaquero from a guy in the marketplace and second time I took it out the barrel started twisting, sent it in to Ruger, fixed for $30 and have not had any issue since.

Hmm...If I ever wanted to sell a firearm I'd want to take the buyer to the range just to let them try it out, assuming they're local or can meet up somewhere. Conversely, if I was ever in a position to buy I'd expect a similar demonstration...

ya ive noticed this too but havent had a serious issue as a result from buying used on cgn

Every gun I have sold has been at the range and I always offer up the option of full inspection/demo. Bottom line is that guns can get finicky, randomly without warning so at least the buyer has had every chance to back out. I am as honest as I can possibly be so I am confident that I am not screwing over a buyer.

I've been on both sides of the equation.

I've purchased "new" via GB and once I received it understood immediately why he sold it. For online purchases or something I'd have concern over, I would go with a manufacturer that has a great/lifetime warranty. In this case, that came in handy.

I've also purchased as part of a larger deal and then turned around and sold the items I didn't want (or shot - but was told by the seller "everything shoots great"). When I sold it to another buyer later, I communicated I never fired the gun. He bought it, took it to the range, shot it and then told me "my gun" didn't work and needs "extensive" repair that I'm responsible for. He went from a noob to a gunsmith overnight thanks to YouTube and the web. He felt my written and in person statement of "I never fired the gun" should cover any and all issues he believes he now has (sure if I was a shop/busniess or manufacturer selling NEW)...but at the end of the day it was a used gun and sold as such with full disclosure. Plus, I have no idea what the buyer may have done to the gun when shooting or taking apart once it was in his possession. BTW, the "extensive" repairs were less (with parts and labor) than the shipping charges.

Too many buyers of USED guns expect them to be exactly as new (fit, finish and performance). In some cases that may be true, but I find those to be the exception, not the rule. I view any used gun just like a used car. The gun was only fired 20 times (uh, yeah...sure) and the car was only driven to church on Sundays by a little old lady.

I purchased an AR that had fire control issues. Problem didn't rear its head till I went to the range. Had to put a new trigger in it. Also has some gas block issues. Over all i would be leary buying another weapon used for some joe shmuck online.

I have bought a few used guns that had isues. One looked new and it maybe the seller never shot it....or maybe he did and that was why he was seling it. It was an RIA Match 45 but since it had a lifetime warranty, that I have read is pretty good, I didn't worry too much about it and eventually Armscor replaced it. The other was a Ruger MKII pistol that I got for $75 because the seller told me it shot too far to one side even with the sight adjusted all the way to try to compensate for it. Ruger replaced that pistol too. Both of these times the manufacterers paid all the costs of shipping and re-dros and transfer fees. If the warranties do not cover the shipping costs then the waranty is not very good in my opinion, with the cost of shipping a handgun what it is.
