Need to buy gunlock in PPT transaction???

I called a gun store to ask about their fee for a PPT and was told $35 and $20 for the gun lock. I asked what the gun lock fee was for and was told it's a federal regulation. I replied that the firearm is like new and has the factory lock included with the sale and transfer of the firearm. They came back and said it's a required federal regulation.
I haven't done a PPT in recent years, but is this new or are they looking for more income?

I think you just need a lock with a receipt of purchase within 30 days. Try a different store.

That would be complete FUD BS The law is pretty much you must have a lock with the gun or a receit for one within 30 days of the gun pick up . and having a lock sold with the gun covers it so they are lieing to you . find another shop stat
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

Take your business somewhere else. $20 for a lock is just a way to charge you more for the PPT

See the wiki article -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Bu...es.2C_and_Laws

Some FFLs feel that the lock included with the gun doesn't stand audit; one solution is to buy the lock as a separate listed item, like
                  1 fine handgun -- $450
                  handgun lock -- $1
Another is to use an FFL who just throws in a lock (usually Project Childsafe or similar).

A third is, on the way to pick up the gun, to buy the lock at Walmart, bring the lock and the receipt but DO NOT open the package. Show lock and receipt to the FFL. Take your gun. Return the lock.

I know... and then wonder why the lock was $20... I'd expect the lock to be $50 at that place.

Some places do not accept the brought in lock either, and a shop charging $20 for a lock would be one of those places

I'm surprised nobody picked up on "it's a federal law". Unless I'm mistaken, federal law says nothing about a 30 day old receipt, it's the California law that talks about a receipt.

Correct - but FFLs must satisfy both sets of laws.

It SHOULD work to bring in any old lock (for the Feds, since they don't specify) and then submit a Safe Affidavit for CA, but I don't yet know of any FFLs who think that would survive the audits.

It SHOULD work that BATF would accept a Safe Affidavit, since safes qualify for the Federal law, but they won't.

Thx for not naming the store. Find another store or buy one and keep the slip like mentioned above.

I think I've found a good one then. They asked for a lock (without receipt), signed affidavit and was done in about 15 minutes and no complaints
