Work Surfaces for Gun Maintenance

Just got done watching another of many videos where folks are performing gun smithing/maintenance/cleaning on hard surfaces like wood....makes me cringe every time.

I would never consider working on any gun unless it was on a soft surface like a mat, carpet or a towel. Am I anal for thinking that sliding a gun around repeatedly on a hard surface is eventually gonna damage the finish?

I use a towel on my workbench, mostly to capture small parts and liquids. I'm not too concerned about gun damage from the bench surface, it's still softer than metal.

Yup. A clean wood workbench won't harm your gun. Just brush it off and lay 'er down. I use a towel too though, keeps the bench clean.

How is the wood going to damage the gun? It's a gun, not fine jewelry. The only problem with using a hard surface like wood, is small parts rolling around.

Yup. A clean wood workbench won't harm your gun. Just brush it off and lay 'er down. I use a towel too though, keeps the bench clean.

Funny... That is the exact reason I put a towel down on my bench too. I want to limit the grease/oil getting onto my nice workbench.

Best work surface I've used is a piece of industrial rubber floor mat. Buy a piece that's ribbed and made of frim but not hard rubber. The ribs will catch pins screws and springs to keep them on The bench. The rubber can be wiped off to clean spills and wonr hold onto chips and dirt like carpet or a towel will. And lastly the rubber won't ding wood or scuff metal like hardwood might.

go to home depot or lowes and get a carpeted hallway rug runner. you buy it by the foot. and its cheap enough its disposable. heavy beach towels work good too.

My holster wears out the finish on my gun, this thread is making me rethink even carrying at all.

I only lay my guns on mats or towels... I know a lot of guys say a warn gun is a beautiful gun...

But use wear is pretty.. Neglect and lazyness wear is horrid IMO.. And you can see the difference so your not anal just know how to have nice things.

Mats or towels for me also. The AR goes on a carpet on the workbench.
