.30-06--->.338-06

I inherited a Savage Model III .30-06 that was rechambered and stamped .338-06. The rifle is nice and shoots very well, the only problem is finding .338-06 ammo (I currently don't reload).

I also inherited about 20 rounds of the previous owners reloads which uses .30-06 casings. Is the rifle still capable of accepting .30-06 rounds (I assume no)? How difficult was it for the previous owner to rechamber it to .338-06?

You've got several options, start reloading, sell the rifle, or get a new barrel in the caliber of your choice. I don't think that there's any commercial ammo available.

The original owner probably just swapped out barrels. It's not that hard on a Savage.

Do not shoot any other ammo out of the rifle!

.338-06 A-Square uses a necked up 30-06 case to accept .338 diameter bullets. I believe it is just a barrel change to go back to 30-06, I would see if you still had the factory barrel around somewhere.

And no, it isn't a good idea to shoot .308 diameter bullets down a .338 tube.

I own a 338/06, it's a very good cartridge. The only factory loads were from A Square and Weatherby. The ammo has been discontinued. It will be difficult to find the ammo. Too bad because it's a very efficient round.

For reloading, the cartridge is very easy to reload for. 30/06 cases through a F/L 338/06 die with a tapered expander and you have 338/06 cases. That's it.

If you're not going to reload for it, you can have it rebarreled back to 30/06 or another long action cartridge.

And no, the rifle does not take 30/06 ammo. They shoot completely different caliber bullets.

Midway sells several loads for the .338-'06 from Nosler and its available now, but is a little pricey at $85 for a box of 20.

You can also go directly to the A Square website and buy some for $43.

I'm sure that there are also custom makers that can meet your needs.

If you only hunt and verify your sight/scope you should only go through a few rounds a year.

I wouldn't bother to spend the cash on a barrel change.

If you want a smaller cartridge get another rifle in .243 or so.
