Cordova shooting range in Rancho Cordova

Not sure if I plan to go back to Cordova for 2 reasons. First reason is there is a sign saying if you have a concealed license that you can not carry. It says no firearms in holsters. Second reason is no rifle cases on range, so you have to carry your rifles out in the open instead of in a bag, which for me is just easier to carry in the bag.

I like the RO's but I really do not like being told I can not concealed carry because they do not allow guns in holsters. I'll probably just keep going to Sac Valley, it is a bit of a drive more, but I really think it is worth it. Main reason went to Cordova was because who I was shooting with was already driving a good distance and Sac Valley is just that much further for him.

Plus at Sac Valley you can shoot at not just 25 or 100 yards, you can move the targets to 50 and 75.

      Curley,

When I lived in EDH, I took Latrobe Road to Jackson Highway to get to SacValley. Less than 30 minutes.... It's a nicer drive than 50 to Sunrise.

There's so much more to SacValley; 300 yard rifle range, action pistol bays, 500 meter sillouette, 1000 yard range, Cowboy town...

Or go Scott Rd and around to Hwy 16 -

I don't like Cordova because it seems that everytime I am there, there is some kind of confrontation on the firing line.

I had a friend go out to his car to get more ammo - a guy starts to setup on his lane - Literally moved his gun - - - -

I had a gang banger looking guy get mad at a shooter because the 3rd time the gang banger approached the bench during a cease fire the shooter told him to stay the F away from the bench - banger starts yelling he's gonna kick his arse etc.... banger got kicked out - GREAT now I have an angry guy with a gun behind me in the parking lot.... I don't want to be an innocent bystander for anyone....

To much drama at Cordova - All I get at SacValley are family guys....

Plus I use the action bays at SacValley - once you've used those, there is no going back to the static firing line.

Dont understand the CCW issue with 'em but with gun cases/bags, I would think it deters theft.

I know a bunch of folks here don't care for Cordova, but I dig it. Alotta blue collar... Last trip with my oldest son, I was in a lane next to a couple asian cats that we're real cool, let me throw a couple down the pipe with their Mosin...

I prefer open ranges. I hate being told what to do when I shoot and I like to plink. That being said, Cordova isn't bad but like I said I don't like being told what to do and when to do it when I shoot. So, I usually don't go to Cordova.

I am worried about Cordova though, with all those stores and homes being built up around it. It is just a matter of time until their is a lawsuit to shut it down.

Their CCW(LTC) class was quite painless though. I will give them that.

That is how I go. I also shoot at Cowboy Town, I've been a SASS memeber for 15 or so years. I went to Cordova because my buddy had already driven 30 or so minutes and wasn't in the mood to drive further. I won't make that mistake again.

I started out going to Cordova all the time. The employees and ROs there great.

BUT the very last time I went, there was a mom, dad and their ~15yo son with rental guns right beside me. I glance over and the kid is working on getting his finger positioned just right on the trigger while mom and dad were coaching him. He just happened to be holding the 357 magnum sideways, pointing right at my chest, while he was making sure he could pull the trigger correctly. Mom and dad were oblivious .. even a little offended when I jumped back yelled "point that f@#king gun down range". I've gone to Sac Valley ever since.

Good ole CSC... I spent 3 years of my college and post college life there. I worked both the range and ran the store. I agree with some of you guys and I also go to Sac Valley and the new Gun Range as well. Hope this may explain why they don't allow holstered firearms and rifle cases on the range.

They don't allow firearms in holsters because there are too many individuals who will walk into the retail store with loaded guns. Even with the no holstered gun signs there was always someone who'd pull a loaded concealed firearm to inspect. Yes, a few times I was surprised when an idiot would pull a gun out of his pants or holster to show me because he needed a mag or there was something wrong with it.

Unlike Sac Valley the CSC store is also filled with rifles, shotguns, handguns, and many pre-ban firearms. Robbery is also a major concern and the owner required any employee who was to carry on the premesis to acquire a CCW. (I realize that the owner could consent to employees carrying, but for some reason he wanted CCW's) That's actually how I acquired mine because he thought I couldn't get one 10 years ago, but he wrote me a letter of recommendation anyways. The guys working in the store don't know if a guy with a holstered weapon or weapon out of the case is going to try to rob the place or is just going there to shoot. Not allowing holstered firearms in the store reduces the confusion.

The property is leased from the Rancho Cordova park district, so many of the rules and regulations are due to their limitations. The park district has a lot of control of what the business can do and as all political entities are afraid of liability.

I'm sure you and many of our fellow Calgun members are regular shooters and are proficient with our firearms. However, we are the exception to the rule. The vast majority of the CCW and CDC who have to qualify may shoot once a year for qualifications. They could barely qualify let alone safely and effectively deploy a firearm from their holster. Sac Valley allows us to use their bays after we take one of their qualification courses. CSC isn't equipped to handle holster work during regular business hours due to their range setup. If an idiot has a ND at Sac Valley in one of their bays it'll only be him or his friends next to him. At CSC a ND could wound or kill anyone along the firing line, since there are no balistic partitions. I have plenty of stories of individuals not paying attention or when a girl gets a hot piece of brass down her shirt. It's hard enough to keep the line safe without holsters

Even with the rules of no loaded firearms or holstered firearms there have been several ND's, when individuals are checking in with the range masters. Most of them were off duty LEO's who unholstered their firearms and had a ND. If you decide to go again take a look at the table you put your firearms on for inspection. Unless they replaced it that was from a ND by a LEO. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the round got lodge in the range shack.

Regarding the no rifle cases on the range. Theft is a concern, but having a bunch of rifle cases laying on the firing line poses some hazards. People trip and could injure themselves. Also, not every gun owner out there is the sharpest tool in the shed. You'll be surprised how many of them forget to clear their weapons before they leave. Range masters can't check to make sure the rifles are unloaded, once they are in their cases. A concern would be someone leaves a round in the chamber and puts it in the case. If something bumps the trigger it could cause a ND, which will be pointed along the firing line. That's why they require muzzles up with the actions open, when entering and leaving the range without cases.

Personally, I'm a little spoiled because they don't care if I carry, do holster work, bring my rifle cases in, etc. They do make some exceptions for regulars as I did back in the day. The guys who were there a few times a week or there every other week we'd make exceptions during slow times on the range. When it was busy on a weekend or during hunting season we'd ask that they follow the rules, so no one else gets the bright idea of drawing from a holster or do double taps when they weren't qualified to do so.

Double taps and rapid fire was another complaint I'd get regularly. If I felt that the guy could keep the rounds on target I'd let him do so. Keep in mind that if the rounds escape the range they may travel into populated areas. If you look up at the baffled's next time you'll notice the holes in the wood. Many shooters put holes while slow fire because they didn't pay attention to their front sight.

There's a hole in the ceiling from a .45acp. That guy rented a 9mm Beretta 92FS from me on a Thursday. Came back that Saturday and decided to eat the gun I recommended. I'm just glad he didn't shoot me on Thursday, so he could off himself and didn't hurt anyone when he took his own life. That's why they have a buddy policy now when renting.

CSC is one of the oldest ranges in our area that is still operational. The rules and regulations are a pain, but there are reasons behind them.

                    Hope this helps..

Yep, like I said there are too many idiots out there.. The RO's should be watching for this behavior and I'm surprised they let a 15 year old shoot a rental gun. The RO should have kicked them off the range with no exceptions.

And the fees keep going up and up. It cost me over $60 to rent an M&P9 with 2 boxes of ammo. The M&P9 didnt even have a front sight dot for that price

It's definitely not getting cheaper to shoot anywhere. The gun industry is definitely being helped by Obama and the current economic times. I don't forsee prices going down on range fees, guns, and ammo anytime soon.

Best way to try out a gun that your interested in buying is to go with a buddy who has one. Buy the ammo at Ammo Depot or Walmart and then head to the range.
