Places to shoot in Idyllwild wilderness?

After looking at this info thread on shooting in parks/forests/etc, I am looking at a detailed map of Idyllwild and can use some clarification. I just got back from a short trip out there to camp for one night and we looked around checking out some of the camps and I wanted to ask about shooting in these areas:

    1) Boulder Basin, Dark Canyon, Stone Creek, Fern Basin and Marion Mountain are all designated in the San Bernardino National Forest. Is shooting legal (given away from roads, backstock, etc)?

    2) Now also a 2.5 mile hike to the direct East of Stone Creek, Fern Basin and Marion Mountain is the Mt. San Jacinto State Park Wilderness

    3) To the East of Black Mountain and Fuller Ridge is the San Jacinto Wilderness.

Whats the call on these three areas for target shooting and open carry?

Last thread on this was in 2007 it appears and since then Bee Canyon has been shut down.

Thanks! Would like to head back out there again to camp and shoot if possible

Right but the entire area is divided up between the San Bernardino National Forest, Mt. San Jacinto State Park Wilderness and San Jacinto Wilderness... of these three areas is it legal to shoot (where safe)?

Bee Canyon is a great place to shoot, but is generally closed to target shooting during the mid-Summer to fall months due to fire hazard (not to mention it's hotter than hell back there from about July to October). It's usually opened to target shooting after we get our first good rain. You can always call the Idyllwild Ranger Station at (909) 382-2922 to see if Bee has been opened for target shooting. Bear in mind the ranger station hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed noon to 1:00 p.m.), and is closed Wednesday, Thursday and all holidays.

The dirt road leading back the shooting areas (Bee Canyon Truck Trail) is not very long (1-2 miles) and can generally be accessed with a 2-wheel drive car, HOWEVER, the road is prone to getting washed out during heavy rain. So again, call the ranger station to check both the condition of the road, and weather or not the Canyon is open to shooting on a given day. Best of luck finding public places to shoot

Ok so the National Forest is out, what about the San Jacinto Wilderness?? (to the East of Black Mountain and Fuller Ridge)? I'm referencing the Tom Harrison San Jacinto Wilderness map which has the area divided up into the three areas (#1,#2,#3 from my original post)

It is within the National Forest. Most wilderness areas are closed to any type of target shooting and hunting is very restricted.

Bee Canyon when it opens back up is your best bet.

Ok thanks guys, its just a little confusing looking at a National Forest map, where its divided up into different sections within it (wilderness/forest/park/etc)...it piques my interest. Was hoping to find a nice little camping spot where I can take a hike to have some .22 fun shooting cans

I looked into this a while back since I like to camp near Idyllwild. Bee Canyon is really the only nearby place to shoot. Pretty much the mountain is closed to all but very limited seasonal hunting. However, when you're out that way, there are areas near Palm Springs where you can shoot, so you're better off driving down the mountain and into the desert for your shooting needs.
