Laws and Requirements when buying Ammo

I'm a new handgun owner and recently I bought some ammo (.22lr & .40S&W) at Big 5 Sporting Goods.

Is it standard procedure that they check my I.D. and write down some personal information on some log book AND take my right thumbprint? Is this Big 5 policy? CA law? Are all the stores I go to going to log my personal info & thumbprint whenever I buy some ammo from them?

    Thanks!

Are you perhaps located in Sacramento?

That be local government and/or store policy.

There is no CA state requirement for any of that (logging info & thumbprint).

CA and Fed requirement = make sure they purchaser is 18+ years of age for rifle/shotgun ammo and 21+ years of age for handgun ammo.
So, a vendor may request to see ID for compliance with these requirements.

I'm in the Los Angeles (818) area.

I was just reading some law (AB 962) that would require logging personal info & thumbprint when buying handgun ammunitions. But that law was deemed unconstitutional and overturned before it took effect in 2011.

Since I've never bought ammo before, I just thought it was part of the process. I don't mind them checking my ID. I just believe writing the info down and taking a thumbprint was a little too much when buying ammo. I'll take my business elsewhere next time. Thanks.

i think its just Big5 in the LA area. if you go to a gun store, you just pay.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I believe it's also a City of LA law, similar to Sacramento.

Yeah. It is. I don't know exactly what cities the law effects or the exact details, but I've had to go through the same process when I bought ammo at Turners in Reseda.

                          EDIT://

I suggest you buy your ammunition outside the limits of this ridiculous law. I can't speak for you, but...

I'm not a criminal and I don't use my legally owned firearms, or legally owned ammunition, for illegal purposes.

As a law abiding citizen, it's none of any government(s) f**king business what ammunition I buy, how much ammunition I buy, where and when I buy my ammunition, or how I use my ammunition.

I've bought ammo here in San Jose at a couple of different Big 5 stores and have never been asked to show id or thumbprint.

Turners in Pasadena does not have those requirements. They're nice there too
