Buying rifle as a gift question

I just found this site since I wasn't quite aware of California firearms laws and had a quick question about purchasing a firearm as a gift.
I live in Arizona and purchased a gun for my son's birthday as a gift, paid for it online and had it sent to an FFL in California for him to do the California Dealer Record of Sale. Is he going to have any trouble picking this up since it was a gift?
I didn't even think to put his name as the billing address or anything like that since I wasn't aware of California's laws at the time and the rifle had shipped already with my billing address and name on it. I didn't even think about it until he brought this up to me.

Can you purchase firearms as gifts in California like this.

There is no problem legally speaking. As long as he does the transfer at a California FFL then he is good to go.

But does the FFL know that the rifle is on its way? Did you check with his local FFL first or did you just pick the FFL off of a list that the online distributor had?

The FFL is going to charge him $25 to do the Dealer Record of Sale. He is also going charge him a fee for doing the transfer from out of state. This second fee can be whatever the Dealer wants to charge, but usually ranges from $50 to $100.

So your son will probably have to pay at least $75 to get his rifle from the Dealer.

My buddy and I recently went shooting and he shot corrosive yugo ammo through his Mosin and figured he could just piss in the barrel and call it a day. Several days later the bolt was rusted shut but I guess the fouling wasnt TOO bad.

I am not 100% but I would think he would have to be there to show his ID and all that in order to start his 10 days.

So, is there no way to surprise someone with a gun as a gift, CA to CA?

Sure if it's for your kid, or it's a long gun 50 years or more old. (all local and state laws apply.)
