transporting guns near airport

Quick question, if one happened to be going to drop someone off at LAX, and was planning on stopping by the range afterwards, are there any special rules like school zones?

One could be concerned with such a thing considering they do those search checkpoints entering the airport etc.

So would two long guns in soft cases, with cable locks in the actions, located in a separate and locked trunk be an issue?

The cable locks are not needed, but they don't violate any laws or rules, so if you like to use them, that's fine.

Federally, the law prohibiting firearms most applies to 'sterile areas', and since you're not going to go there, that's no issue.

Law allows you to fly with firearms, so you have to be allowed to have unloaded cased firearms in your car, in the parking lots, and in terminals, up to the check-in counters.

I have no experience with those checkpoints; a couple years ago a guy got in some hassle, but IIRC one or two of his were actually loaded.

I figured it shouldn't be an issue considering people fly with them, just spooked by the checkpoint. Anyone with any specific experience?

Don't bring your guns with you when you pick someone up at LAX. Two years ago the LA airport police made two busts about a week apart of people doing what you plan to do.

The first guy had about 20 guns including a registered assault weapon. They treated him like a terrorist and took his guns. The LAPD gun unit then went to his house and took the rest. The guy lives in Orange county not LA so I don't know how they could search his house in the OC. He was finally charged with "Transporting an Assault Weapon" which is a felony. Apparently you can only transport one to and from the range with no detours.

The second guy had a couple of shotguns and had them seized for "Non-registered Firearms". They did not get them back even though shotguns do not have to be registered. The LAPD will keep them because they know it will cost you more to fight to get your guns back than to go and buy a new one.

LAPD appears to have some problems understanding California law regarding guns. On the whole, one should probably not bring guns to LAX unless one has a lawyer on tap.
