Will you have to register current rifles?

Would direct family transfers be affected?

                There isnt any.

After 2014, when you DROS (for any reason) a long gun in California, your purchase will go into an expensive and useless database.

Are you refering to what California improperly labels 'assault weapons'?

I dont understand what you mean by 'rifle registration' Can you provide some context for your question?

Any time i have purchased a riffle i have had to do the DOJ. paperwork and wait 10 days. This is a form of registering to me. a way for the government to keep track of your guns.

There is NO current registration for long guns.

DROS request records for long guns are destroyed after a period of time. The DROS system was started back in the 20's to include handguns. Long Guns are exempted until 2014.

Notice when you DROS a long gun, no serial number, no make or model. The state knows you bought a 'long gun' and where. At least until the record is destroyed. The FFL maintains a Federal 4473 form that they store on site. That could be used to track a gun back to the original purchaser (See Red Dawn). The FFL system was created in 1968 with the passage of the Gun Control Act which was modeled on Weimar and Nazi gun control laws.

so what you are saying is riffles purchased in the past years are not attached to the buyer with serial # make and model ? If i buy from a private party a riffle manufactured in the 70s or 80s that has been in there family there is no record of it ? should i do a private party transfer?

There are people that have more info on this topic than me, but as I understand it, if you buy a long gun from a dealer or a private party, the DROS contains only a request for a 'long gun' and then is destroyed (for now).

Remember that private sales are almost verboten in California, and must be run through a dealer where a background check and ten day wait apply. In a free state, you see the gun you want in the Nickel, then you go buy it. End of story.

There are some exceptions for C&R long guns that over 50 years old. I have bought several guns, a Russian SKS, a Mosin M44 for cash on the street the way God intended (of course I have an FFL03, so I had to log it myself). If you are that concerned, find someone with a C&R long gun and buy it for cash before 2014.

There are millions of unregistered guns in California. Anyone that bought or sold a gun privately before 1995? for cash didnt need to register jack. If you take an unregistered hand gun to a dealer for a transfer today (the law) a DROS will be run and the gun will now be logged into the system. If you buy a long gun, a DROS will be run for 'long gun' and destroyed.
