    looking to try something new

I went out to Hodges rd this past weekend and did some shooting with a few buddies. Needless to say when you start shooting other guns you want to buy another one. After shooting my buddies Remington 700 30-06 I was hooked and want to get into some distance shooting. What would you recommend for distance of about 200-yard make model scope caliber and why. Thanks for your help because I am completely lost.

Savage Axis .223, ammo cheap, good entry gun and you can always swap out the barrel and bolt for higher caliber later.

I say 6.5 gren. Get great groups at 200 and if the need can have amazing ballistics for longer range as well.

But 223 is a good choice also fur sub 500

I'd say if you can handle a 30-06, why not a 270WSM, bullet shoots straight and hits hard. I have a howa 1500 with nikon stirling scope chambered in 270, can drill targets from 200 easy.

Although you cannot go wrong with a 223, alot cheaper to shoot, you cannot hunt big game with this caliber (California requires 30cal or larger, i believe). 30-06, and .308 are plentiful and you see alot of rirfles chambered in them, those calibers have a proven backround in both long distance shooting and hunting. Although i just can get over how accurate I am with a 270WSM, personal preference.

I say howa because of what you get for the price. These rirfles are the same as the van gaurds, and from personal experience i love them.

I say determine your budget first, If you just want a entry level rirfle for plinking, savage axis isn't a bad choice at all, stiff trigger, and lighter barrel but for 200 yards, with some practice, you will not have a problem. I had two of these, although entry level you get a lot of gun for your buck.

If your buget allows, a remington or howa is a great choice. Try them out first and see which you like best, there are alot of good rirfles to choose from, but which ever you pick should be the best for you.

most good condition bolt action milsurps will hold good groups @ 200 yards.... Heck some very nice ($200) Mosins Nagants will hold a respectable group at 200 yards. A PU will run you $700ish out the door.

            x2 for 6.5 Grendel.

Just talked a buddy into building one for target and hunting. These are quite accurate at distances beyond 200 yards as well....
