    RUST...

My brother went shooting with a S&W m 19 357 revolver, he was shooting at a friends house and spent some time there, talking and visiting.

When he came back, he took the all blue revolver out of its holster and it had rusted on one side of the gun.

He soaked it in pen oil, but it did not help. So he called me up and I don't really know what to tell him.

So can the pistol be restored, re blued, or maybe have some kind of coating put on it. He told me if he puts another paint/coating on there it's not going to be the same, or the revolver may not be worth much?

Also, I forgot of the name of the company that sends you different designs for firearms, so you can repaint them, so if anyone knows the company, can you drop their name.

    How should he handle this.

I have never seen rust happen in a few hours... a week yes...time spent talking and visiting...NO.

A gunsmith can re- blue it. Look up Member Technique, I think he paints firearms....several here do it professionally.

Spray some WD40 on it and rub with fine steel wool.

I was shown when I was just a little guy how to use gun oil and aluminum foil to take rust off a barrel without destroying the finish. The foil is 'softer' than the steel wool and less likely to 'strip' the parts. I had to do this about a month ago, and as scared as I was that I was not remembering correctly, it worked in about 10 seconds. Let's put this under the "it worked for me" column, but my Ruger MK I shows a little holster wear but no signs that there was ever rust, nor scratches or other damage. good luck on your project.

DON"T USE STEEL WOOL! If it is just surface rust, flood the surface with something like BreakFree CLP and leave on surface for a while, then take a pre-1980 copper penny and use the the edge of penny to gently scrape rust off. If it is deeper rust, refinishing is the only option. By the way, BreakFree has kept my guns rust free for decades.

I used Metal-Glo, a knife polish on a gun and it took the light layer of surface rust off without damaging it. I didn't let the polish dry, just wiped it off after rubbing it a bit.

Send it to http://www.robarguns.com/precision_coatings.htm and have it NP3'd or something.
