Worst night at the range: A rant.

i have rented guns before that have not been in the best shape. i rented a sig and the something was up with the slide lock, it was flopping around i had to hold it down in order to shoot it. they should not have rented it out like that

Rental ANYTHING usually sucks and is barely cleaned/lubed.

Talking to the folks at ranges that see/fix/rent heavy usage guns is a good way to learn about gun durability under bad maintenance.

Learned a lot from the guys at LA Gun Club about which guns go down for what reason.

I certainly wouldn't buy a used gun from a range. I saw the guy take it back to lube it and dink with it for 5 minutes before he let us rent it. Apparently he was expecting problems already. And that Ruger slide was so sloppy it pulled in a huge chunk of her skin under the slide.

Of course it was no where to be found. It didn't break or snag or tweak, it just straight up flew off. Anyone else had that problem with an external extractor with Kimber? I've heard it was a common problem.. but dang.

Sorry, can't help on the extractor issue but they should be reasonably inexpensive to replace and drop in.

Speaking of jacked up range guns, I was wanting to fire a .380 and everything but the Kahr was out for maintenance. First shot FTE, 2, 3, 4, FTE blah blah. Kinda pissed I had to buy 50rnds.

Crappy Days

Sorry to hear that man. We all have days like that.

Went to a handgun training session recently and one of the other students' gun kept jamming. A lot. Like every other round.

After awhile, I paid closer attention and he was running a very nice Wilson Combat 1911. They make very, very nice and reliable pistols.

What are the odds of that? I'm sure it was something easy to have corrected, but sometimes, its just a crappy day.

Kimber did fix the extractor issue. The OPs gun is an older one.

You will not find the external extractor on the Kimber web site. They tried external extractors in their guns for a short time but they did not function well. Kimber went back to using internal extractors. I am curious to find out what they tell you when you call them. It is possible that they will ask you to send the gun back to them and they will fit it with a new slide, with an internal extractor. They should do it under warranty.

My Ultra Carry II with an external extractor is currently back at the factory. I sent it back because of reliability issues related to the external extractor. I hope they just replace the slide, I'll find out when they ship it back.

Sucks that you had a bad day at the range, i was one of those lucky jerks that got flawless rental guns. I was trying to make up my mind up on what 45acp pistol i wanted as i hadn't had a new one in ages, so i rented a 3rd gen G21 and a S&W1911. they both eat all 100 rounds (50 rounds each) of the over priced under powered range ammo without a hiccup. I did fall back in love with the G21 that day.


Anyway i'd say give the SR9 another try mine hasn't had one problem yet that i can remember.

So I've been married for 4 months now and the wife already owns a shotgun and is looking into getting a handgun. Score.

We decide to do some research and then head to the range. We're currently staying in Arizona so I thought now is a good time to buy.

Last night we get to the range and my Kimber 1911 Eclipse Pro II tags along. We rent a Sig P226 in 9mm, get some targets, and set up.

She fires a round with the Sig and it jams immediately. Ok, no biggy. She clears it, fires again, jams again. Well, maybe she's limp wristing it. I take over, first three shots are fine, fourth jams. I take a look and the feeding round is completely vertical. Looked like a magazine issue. Plus the gun has seen better days. So we go back in and swap it out for a Ruger SR9.

She starts shooting down range with the Ruger, by round 14 it jams. Really? These guns have to be in the worst shape or something. The last time I shot a Sig P226 it was flawless, same with a Ruger. So she goes to clear the jam and it bites her, really bad. She's obviously done. I finish clearing it and toss the last 16 rounds downrange.

Ok, well that was an experience. At least I have my good 'ol Kimber with me. I load it up, hang a new target and send it out. First round felt good. I love this gun. Second round was dead on. Third round-- JAMMED!?!??! ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME! Ok, I calm down. Clear the jam and fire again. JAMMED AGAIN!!!! I look to the side of the gun only to notice the extractor is missing. Oh, well that explains why it was jamming... WAIT WHAT MY EXTRACTOR IS MISSING?!?!?! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!

I need to ask, just so I avoid renting guns at the range you went to, which range was it, if you don't want to "out" them publicly could you at least PM me. I only ask because my GF is in the market for a handgun and I really don't want to waste time at a range with extremely beaten up guns.
